This form is to be submitted as an appendix in your program review each fiscal year and a copy should be forwarded to the classified prioritization chair. For positions requested outside the program review cycle (e.g., retirements, resignations, grant/categorical funded positions), this form should be submitted to the classified prioritization chair and will be used for information/tracking purposes. Funding Source: 100 ☐ ✔ General ☐ Categorical ☐ Grant Grant name: % % % Justification: Why is this position necessary? This position was vacant as of 2010 when the current employee resigned and the position was left vacant due to budget cuts. Upon the loss of our dedicated Online Learning Student Support position, support for online students was moved to the responsibilities of the Distance Education Coordinator and Instructional Designer. While providing effective and timely support to students is priority number one and continues to be of the utmost quality, the lack of this filled position has greatly impacted the online learning program overall. What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations? Online Learning supports the Strategic Plan goal of “Increase the number of students that achieve their educational goal within a reasonable time by clarifying pathways and providing more information and support.” This position would directly serve any Chabot student taking courses that use Blackboard for their online, hybrid, or on-campus classes (for reference: in spring 2015, there were 818 courses using Blackboard). Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs to be considered? As the Online Services computer lab is established as a location for students to gain assistance with campus technology needs, this position could be partially located in the lab to be available for students and partially in a more private office setting to develop online resources and answer student help requests. This position will report to the Dean of Applied Technology and Business. What is the consequence of not funding this position? The consequence of not funding this position is that the essential student support responsibilities will continue to be done by the Distance Education Coordinator and Instructional Designer. This impacts the overall support and resources for faculty using Blackboard or teaching online/hybrid courses and the ability focus on program requirements for online learning as determined by the state. What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request? In the effort to provide students with an on-campus resource, we have utilized a student assistant to be an online learning "tutor." While this student assistant can meet with students who come into the online services lab and offer advice from the perspective of an experienced online student, this student assistant cannot provide technical support, develop resources, or provide in-depth support for Blackboard or online learning students. How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this position? Students would have a consistent location and staff person to go to for Blackboard and online learning needs. We could help ensure that the technology and delivery method of a course is not a barrier for their success. What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students? Currently, all student and faculty support for Blackboard and online learning is done by Lisa Ulibarri and Minta Winsor. A student assistant also provides drop-in advice to students in the Online Services lab. Other student assistants in the Online Services lab also try to help out when possible with the demand for online learning support.
