Funding Source: 100 ☐ ✔ General ☐ Categorical ☐ Grant Grant name: % % % Justification: Why is this position necessary? The projected increases in ESYS sections offered, total student headcount, and number of part-time faculty all place additional demands on the support requirements for the ESYS lab facilities, equipment, and supplies. At this time, the single full-time instructor is responsible for maintaining a safe and productive lab environment, with assistance from a student lab assistant. Although the student lab assistant provides significant help, the full-time instructor must provide significant training each time the assistant is replaced due to the graduation or transfer of the student. As the ESYS program expands, the need for continuity in this support position is a critical need. What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations? The Lab Tech will support activities for Electronic Systems Technology, Computer Networking Technology, Computer Application Systems, and Engineering programs. These lab activities are critical components in the pathways for transfer or employment in the related technical fields for these programs. Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs to be considered? The Lab Tech will work in the electronics lab area, rooms 1602, 1614, and 1616. The Lab Tech will primarily report to the full-time ESYS instructor (currently Wayne Phillips), and respond to requests from full-time and part-time instructors in ESYS, CNT, CAS, and ENGR disciplines. What is the consequence of not funding this position? The Lab Tech will be responsible for maintaining the lab equipment in a functional and safe condition. Without a single person providing consistent and continuous monitoring of the environment, the potential for unproductive and/or unsafe conditions significantly increases. What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request? Student lab assistants are a significant help, but lack the experience and conscientiousness to proactively identify and resolve safety and productivity issues in the labs. They are unable to perform troubleshooting and repair tasks beyond a basic level. Their proficiency builds over time, but depart when they transfer, graduate, or complete their course of study. How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this position? Students will have a safer and more productive lab environment. Faculty will have more time to spend with students, rather than addressing lab equipment issues or training student lab assistants. The student lab assistant can spend more time helping students with their lab activity procedures, rather than focusing on equipment and supplies. What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students? Faculty spend unpaid time to maintain the lab facilities, equipment, and supplies. A student lab assistant performs basic duties. Requested by: Wayne Phillips Date: 10/23/15 Area Manager Notes/Response: Area Manager: Date:
