Job Description
Job Title:
Management Information Officer
Responsible to:
Director of Resources (with strong functional ties to Head of Major Gifts)
Salary:
£26,000 to £29,000 (depending on experience)
Location:
Tunbridge Wells, Kent (home based working considered for some of the time)
Contract:
Full time permanent contract
Aim:
To provide high quality, relevant and timely management information for
users throughout Build Africa. To understand the information needs of a
variety of Build Africa staff and to develop efficient, robust tools to meet
those needs. (Note: this is not a conventional management accounting role:
there will be some overlap with the existing finance team but the aim is to
provide information beyond the scope of conventional management accounts).
Responsibilities and Duties
a) Build the Project Tracker (a tool that tracks individual activities within each school and other
project work and links each activity to funders as funding is secured) each year, improve its
functionality and make it more user-friendly
b) Redesign Micro-Budgets for the next three year period (2014 – 2016).
c) Build the Income Outlook tool and ensure it is kept current and accurate
d) Manage the link between Outlook (a tool that predicts future income and categorises this
income according to the level of certainty) and Actual Income / Expenditure
e) Analysis of Income Outlook to assess the degree to which secured and anticipated income
covers Build Africa’s committed expenditure
f) Analysis of Income Outlook to assess the amount of committed unbudgeted programme
spend within secured and anticipated income
g) Create Fundraising Board Report Table on a quarterly basis
h) Develop mechanism for reporting income versus “stretch” (ie aspirational) budget as well as
“base case” (ie very conservative, “break-even”) budget
i) Support Tracking of Red Spend Actual and Forecast.
j) Consolidate Red Spend Approval Information (details of activities funded and local currency
cost of these activities).
k) Review Raiser’s Edge (supporter database) funds in use and create fund targets.
l) Redesign tool for assessing financial impact of statutory funding proposals
m) Work with Finance Team to ensure that tracking and control sheets for restricted income are
accurate, up to date and that the correct activities are authorised for BA’s field teams
n) Work with Finance Manager to develop field expenditure budgeting template.
o) Assist with consolidation of year end accounting data and preparation of SORP format
accounts.
p) To represent the organisation and undertake overseas travel when required.
q) To work with Build Africa stakeholders to identify management information needs and to
create tools to address those needs
r) To undertake all other reasonable activity as requested by the Director of Resources.
s) The post-holder is expected to comply with Build Africa’s child protection policy. This
position falls within Build Africa’s standard category for child protection and will therefore
include a CRB check.

Experience:
a) A proven track record of working with colleagues to understand business informational needs
and of creating appropriate tools to satisfy those needs
b) Strong experience of gathering a wide range of data from different sources and analysing that
data.
c) Demonstrable experience of improving the efficiency and/or effectiveness of existing
information tools
Skills:
a) Extremely strong Excel literacy and good general IT skills (e.g. Word and databases)
b) Strong analytical skills, understanding which data is relevant and which is not relevant to
particular task
c) The ability to critically assess data and check with the source if a piece of data looks
questionable
d) Attention to detail is very important, as is an understanding of the audience being addressed.
e) An ability to think creatively and laterally, both in improving existing tools and creating new
tools to address information needs.
f) An ability to meet competing deadlines and manage your workload with the minimum of
supervision.
g) An ability to identify, gather, record, organise, present and evaluate information.
h) Strong financial literacy.
i)
Good interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively as part of a diverse and
international team.
j)
Enthusiasm and determination to meet individual and/or team targets.
k) An ability to understand and demonstrate commitment to equal opportunities and child
