March 21: Errors that occur during meiosis
Content/Activity
Review of meiosis
Errors: block mutations (during crossing over): deletion,
p. 24
inversion, translocation, duplication.
With the people at your table, do questions 1 and 2.
Errors: non-disjunction (during independent assortment) =
p. 25
failure of homologous chromosomes to separate properly.
This results in the addition or deletion of one or more
chromosomes from a gamete. If that gamete is fertilized
with a normal gamete, the cells in that zygote will all have an
extra/missing chromosome.
Complete definitions
Aneuploidy: result of non-disjunction. Faulty egg and sperm p. 27
production.
Do #1 and #2 on p. 27. [J: expect to explain #2]
