Science Lesson Plans September 4-7 Standards: SPI 0507.1.1 Identify the major parts of plant and animal cells such as, the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, and cytoplasm. SPI 0507.1.2 Compare and contrast basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells. Monday: No School Tuesday: Cells—Cells importance. 1) Review—Why are cells important? What are the parts of cells? 2) Read and do workbook pages 2-7 in pairs or groups. 3) Venn Diagram—Similarities and differences of a plant and animal cell. Wednesday: Cells—Function of each cell part. 1) Go over Job in the Factory Sheet with students. Fill in blanks together. 2) Go over: Organelle Analogies for plant and animal cells project Example—http://www.slideshare.net/EmilyLoper/cell-organelle-analogies 3) Handout: Animal/Plant Cell Diagram (you may want them to write their ideas down on a notebook paper before giving the diagram.) Thursday: Cells—Function of each cell part. 1) Finish project 2) Study Sheet—have them fill out for tomorrow's test. Friday: Cells—Distinguish between the basic structure and functions of plant and animal cells 1) Cells test. EXTRAS http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/cell/cell.html The Task You are in charge of coming up with a cell/organelle analogy. There is a new facility being built near our school. The owner of the facility has hired you to create positions or parts for the facility. Some possible facilities are: A A A A A A A new new new new new new new amusement park airport mall hospital factory school arcade You will compare the parts of the facility with the various parts of the cell. This is called an analogy. An analogy is stating that one thing is like another. For example: A cell is like a town. (In this example the town is the "facility") Like a cell, most facilities have various parts. For example: Some of the parts of the town that might be used are the mayor, the post office, the bank, the school, the church, the park, the river, the roads, the homes, etc. The various parts of the cell, called organelles, will be compared with parts of the facility that you choose. For example: The mayor of the town is like the nucleus of a cell. They both function in control and maintenance. Your diagram will have a labeled cell part and facility part. The diagram will explain the function of each of the parts, or components, of that facility, and explain how those parts are like the various parts of the cell.
