Purpose of the Course
The purpose of this course is to provide the student with knowledge and skills of how to give
first aid and CPR to adults, children, and infants. Successful completion of all requirements can
lead to certification for a $27 fee paid to the American Red Cross.
Course Objectives: on completion of this course, the student should:

Know the Emergency Action Steps

Know the best procedures when calling Emergency Medical Services

Be able to correctly demonstrate how to perform rescue breaths, CPR, how to clear an
obstructed airway on conscious and unconscious adults, children and infants

Be able to demonstrate how to use an Automated External Defibrillator

Know first aid techniques for the following situations:
o Injuries: bleeding, burns, fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains
o Sudden illness: heart attack, stroke, diabetic emergency, heat and cold emergencies,
poisoning, seizure, bites and stings

Be able to correctly demonstrate control of bleeding and bandaging

Be able to correctly demonstrate how to splint an injured limb

Understand basic safety principles

Course Content and Evaluation

Unit 1: Adult CPR and AED: exam=50 points multiple choice

Unit 2: Child and Infant CPR: exam=40 points multiple choice

Unit 3: First Aid: exam=40 points multiple choice

CPR/AED/First Aid: Skill checks for certification

Quiz points

Attendance points: 2 points for each class. If you are ill and e-mail or call me the day of the
class you miss, you may make up any skill checks, but will not receive attendance credit.
Students with excessive absences will be warned and then dropped.

Final grade: points earned, divided by total points possible, multiplied by 100. 90%=A;
80%=B; 70%=C; 60%=D; 59% or less=F
Class Policies

Wash hands and/or use hand cleanser before and after class

Keep long hair pulled back for CPR drills

Computers, tablets, and smart phones: use only to access notes for class or for video
analysis assignments

Food in class: bars, fruit or other "quiet" foods

Drinks: if you spill you clean
