Course Description
This independent study, one-year advanced course is designed to help the student acquire a more thorough,
in-depth knowledge of accounting procedures and techniques utilized in solving business problems and making
financial decisions. The course of study includes departmentalized, budgetary, cost, and management accounting
for both manufacturing and merchandising businesses. You will apply accounting principles to realistic business
situations by completing selected reinforcement activities and/or practice sets. This course will prepare you for
an entry-level accounting position and provide a strong foundation for accounting or business study in college.
Units of Study
Completing the accounting cycle for a merchandising corporation
Project: Outer Banks Marketplace, Inc.
Accounting for publicly held corporations
Cash funds
Plant assets and depreciation
Uncollectible accounts receivable
Inventories
Notes payable and receivable
Partnerships
Financial statements and liquidation of a partnership
Course Requirements
 This class is designed to be an independent course. You will be EXPECTED to work on your own
while I am teaching the Accounting I class. I will help you as I am able to.
 I will let you work at your own pace. I will have a calendar with the assignments and I’ll try to have
check figures for you in helping complete problems. It is your responsibility to get the assignments
turned in when due. These are due at the end of class. For each day the work is late, you will
receive a 20% reduction in your grade.
 You will be expected to read each chapter and complete the study guide. The study guide will be turned
in each time--even if I don’t always record a grade for it.
 Tests will be shown on the calendar.
 When you are absent, you will have TWO days to make up the work. You will lose 20% for EACH day
that the work is past due.
Classroom Rules
1. Food is NOT allowed in the business room. Water bottles ARE allowed.
2. You are to be prepared to begin when the bell rings. Have all necessary books and supplies with you. If
you need to retrieve these items, you will receive an unexcused tardy.
3. Bring your book, homework, pencil, pocket calculator, and folder or 3-ring binder to class EVERY day.
4. Be respectful toward all persons and equipment in this class. If you have any spare time, you can work
ahead, work on other homework, or read.
5. You will take responsibility for your work space. Straighten up your work area, throw away trash in the
trash can, and push in your chair at the end of the block.

Each class day you should bring the following materials to class:
Mechanical pencil
Folder with pockets OR 3-ring binder
Calculator
Textbook
Grading
All work will be graded on total points. The grade will be based on the grading scale in your student planner.
Helpful Hints
If you are having any problems, don’t hesitate to ask for help. I am available during seminar
and before or after school. DON’T wait until class time to get help on the day work is due!!
You will be given a calendar that will show when work is due. All work will be due on the
day it is listed on the calendar!!
All class work should be done neatly in pencil.
