AP Biology Textbook Reading for Comprehension Step 1 – Read the Intro (beginning) and Summary (end) of the chapter. Step 2 – Go through the chapter and read all the section headings and quickly skim to get an idea of what the chapter is about. Step 3 – Examine the pictures, graphs, and illustrations; read the captions and get a general idea of what they are telling you. Step 4 – Start at the beginning of the section, and read it. You can quickly skim it to get an understanding and then go back and read it carefully. By skimming first, you get an idea of what the important points are, and this helps to deter you from underlining/highlighting everything! After reading it a second time and more thoroughly, make notes in a separate notebook (if you own a book, you can write in it, underline, and make notes in the margins). Do not feel the need to speed through…that accomplishes nothing if you don’t have a full understanding of what you are reading. Step 5 – For each section, while you read, go over (again) the pictures and illustrations. Make sure you FULLY understand pictures. Often times they can make the text much more clear! Step 6 – Ask your teacher if you have any questions!
