Welcome to PCAP’s Action Research Study on the
Effectiveness of the Textbook’s Companion Website in
Improving the Students’ Performance in an
Introductory Biology Course
Welcome,
You are invited to take part in this action research study on the Effectiveness of the
Textbook’s Companion Website in Improving the Students’ Performance in an
Introductory Biology Course. The data you provide me in this study will help me to
explore the effectiveness of the companion website for the textbook, Biology by Sylvia
Mader, 9th ed. in improving the students’ performance in BIOLS 102 General Biology I.
In particular, I am interested in looking into the effect of students using the website’s
online quizzing resource as a study tool in preparing for the monthly test.
All students registered in BIOLS 102 (Sections 2 & 8 only) are actively encouraged to
participate in this study. Students who choose to participate in this study will receive up
to 1 bonus point on top of their final grade. If you decide to take part in this study, you
will be asked to complete the online quizzes and questionnaires. The duration of the
study will continue throughout the semester.
Participation in this study requires access to a computer with an internet connection.
I thank you in advance for your time. The success of this study will rely on the
collection of as much data as possible.

This study is being conducted by Dr Tariq Alalwan, Department of Biology, College of Science,
University of Bahrain in partial fulfillment of the requirements of PCAP.
There are no known risks associated with your participation in this research beyond
those of everyday life. Your participation in this study will be strictly anonymous. Once
you understand what the study is about and if you agree to take part in it, you will be

Instructions
1. Go to the textbook’s website at http://www.mhhe.com/maderbiology9
2. Click on Resources (Registration not required)
3. In the Textbook Navigation list, choose the required chapter.
4. In each chapter choose Quizzes then Multiple Choice Quiz

5. After completing the online quiz, click submit
6. After viewing your results, it is important that you forward me the results by completing
the Routing Information section at the bottom of the page. Type your name, click the
My Instructor box, enter the following email address talalwan@sci.uob.bh and choose
the HTML format.
7. Finally click on email results.
