Thank you for taking the GEA.
Your TC Hold will be removed within 48 hours.
UCM requires students to achieve a minimum score of 425 to pass the general education assessment (GEA). While the
TC Hold will be removed from your student account after testing this semester, you will need to retake the GEA to
fulfill your graduation requirement and avoid future holds. You must wait at least 30 days before retesting.
Completion of the following steps will assist in preparing you and is required prior to retaking the GEA.
Step 1:
1. Go to the library homepage http://library.ucmo.edu/
 In the dark gray menu bar near the top of the page – select: “Browse Databases”
2. Under “Browse by Letter”, click on “L” and scroll down to find the “Learning Express Library”
 Click on Learning Express Library or use the separate link to create an account from off campus
3. Click on “Register” beneath the “Login” button
 Complete the * required fields, student number and course number are not required
 Click on “Create Account” *Must use UCM email address*
4. Under “All Centers” on the dark blue bar select “College Center” OR else in the middle of the screen, click
on the mint green “College Center” box
Step 2:
In order to retake the GEA, you MUST complete the following practice exams with a score of 70% or more. Please
print a score report for each exam. Be aware there is no “print” button on the screen; however, you may “right click”
and select “print” to get your report. The exams are untimed, but should take about 15 minutes each to complete.
Here is the list of required practice exams. Additional exams may be done for improved preparation.
1. Reading Skills Review exam
 Complete one Informational Reading exam
 Complete one Literary Reading exam
 Complete one General Reading exam
2. Grammar and Writing Skills Review
 Complete one Writing exam
3. Math Skills Review
 Complete one Algebra Practice exam
Once you have completed all five of these exams, please bring the printed score reports to Testing Services for review
by our staff. Please make sure your name is on the reports. You WILL NOT be able to retake the GEA until the
practice exams have been completed with a score of 70% or more. Once Testing Services staff members determine
you have met this requirement, we will register you to retake the GEA. Testing Services reserves the right to assign
additional practice exams, if we determine more preparation is necessary before you retake the GEA.
Why is General Education so important?
There are many reasons General Education is important. One big one is that employers tell us the skills you develop in
these courses are important regardless of the industry in which you choose to work. General Education courses are
where you begin to develop basic skills like problem solving, thinking creatively, and the ability to work with others, all
skills critical to success in future classes you take and in the workplace. We assess General Education because the
skills developed here are so important and the university receives funding based on student performance. According
to the Missouri Department of Higher Education Performance for Funding metrics, at least 60% of those taking the
GEA must be in the 50th percentile or higher.
