Snoqualmie Valley School District Highly Capable Program 2014-2015 Fourth Grade Overview Systems First Trimester: Flight-integrates measurement, history of flight, famous aviators, creative writing, hands-on experimentation involving flight, Flight Simulation, and application of critical thinking skills Lost Tribe-multiplication, division and team work during a Math Simulation Missing Pieces Challenge-3 Minute Multiplication Test-Medals awarded Amazing Engineers-creating mazes integrating geometric shapes Extension Trip to Museum of FlightAviation Learning Center November 4-FCES November 5-OES/NBES November 6-SES/CVES Second Trimester: Insect Island-integrates math, science, problem solving, scientific method, and application of critical thinking skills Sleuth-integrates reading, team work, and critical thinking skills Extension Challenge-Pond Study-On Campus Third Trimester: "Edventure" Tour of the Solar System- students plan, research, and present an educational tour for three ports of call in the Solar System Sleuth-continue to analyze clues-Medals awarded for completing the challenge Extension Trip-Bellevue College Planetarium Imagination Celebration: Students complete and present a hands-on/interactive math, science or problem solving project for the event scheduled later in the third trimester Dates-TBA The Highly Capable Program instructor presents the curriculum once a week for ninety minutes. All High-C students are required to keep a journal which is used for reflection and evaluation of their work. High-C is not graded and there is no homework assigned for our classes, although make-up work may be required by the classroom teacher. The culminating activity each year is the Imagination Celebration!! The fourth and fifth Highly Capable Program students create a hands-on/interactive math, science or problem-solving game or activity to share at a thinking carnival held in the spring. All of the third, fourth, and fifth grade students are invited to attend.
