Appendix C – Individual placement description
FY1
This post involves the day to day care of cardiology patient in a busy tertiary cardiac centre, which is one of only 5 UK Heart/Lung transplantation centres. A full range of both general cardiology and more specialised cardiology conditions will be seen during the post.
There will be an opportunity to work both on the CCU and general ward which will expose the junior doctor to a broad range of cardiac patients at various stages of their in patient stay.
The FY1 will be encouraged to admit/clerk a mixture of both acute and planned admissions and present these on the daily ward round during his/her CCU attachment. There is excellent support for the FY1 doctors with claily supervision on the ward with easy access to middle grade/senior input. The CCU boasts a consultant led ward round 365 days per year.
The post offers an unsurpassed opportunity to see, experience and be involved in the management of all forms of cardiological conditions from the most basic to complex.
There is also an active teaching program with two consultant led teaching sessions per month on a variety of cardiology topics. In addition to this the FY1 would be encouraged to attend the weekly Tuesday afternoon teaching held within the trust.
Each FY1 would be appointed a named supervisor with the plan of three meetings during their 4 month attachment (start of post, mid-point assessment and end of attachment sign off). There will opportunities for FY1 to present cases during the attachment on a CBD basis to allow development of their portfolio.
