F2 Cardiology
The cardiology department at Ealing
Hospital is extremely busy. It comprises
6 consultants, 4 registrars, 2 F2s and 4
F1s. There is a designated cardiology ward with around 24 beds, although there is generally an extremely high patient load so often there will be patients on outlying wards as well. There is a 10 patient CCU within the cardiology ward. At Ealing Hospital, there is a cath lab where PCIs are performed and pacemakers are inserted, however primary PCIs are not done here.
Ealing Hospital, ward 4 South
As the firm is extremely busy, a lot is expected from all members of the team, however it is also an extremely rewarding job. The F2 may find that they run their own ward rounds, sometimes with the help of an F1. A designated registrar for their particular patients is contactable if any help is required. There is a consultant ward round for the F2s designated patients once a week. The consultants have high standards and expect their juniors to know a lot about their patients.
During the job, the F2 can further their knowledge of cardiology and enjoyment of the specialty exponentially. There is great opportunity to learn about echos and angios, albeit not performing them.
Senior members of the team are willing to teach the F2 about specific conditions and investigations. They can spend time in clinic, with the cardio physiologists and watching PCIs.
