Event encouraged use of the HR Professional Map For this ‘What the HR Professional Map can do for you!’ workshop back in January, Branch Chair – Sue Roberts was our guest presenter for the evening. The topic was the HR Professional Map, a subject about which Sue has considerable knowledge and experience, having worked with the CIPD over the last couple of years on its development. Sue started by explaining that the HR Professional Map replaces the old CIPD Professional Standards and that the focus of the new map is on professional behaviours and competences rather than theoretical knowledge. The map is designed to be interactive and can be displayed as a ‘moving wheel’, where all sections interlink with each other. It is made up of eight behaviours, ten professional areas and four bands of professional competence and aims to cover the full breadth and depth of the HR Profession. Having introduced the map, Sue went on to explain how it can be accessed and used. She then gave the group the chance to get some hands-on experience of using the map’s self-assessment ‘book’ which individuals can complete, ideally along with their manager, to assess their own position on the map and then use their assessment to plan their future personal development. The group of 13 delegates meant that there was plenty of opportunity for discussion and questions. The group was mixed in terms of their knowledge of the map but, whatever their start point, by the end of the session each had a much improved understanding of what the map is and how it can be used. It was clear, from their feedback, that everyone felt that the session had been very worthwhile and of a very high standard and, most importantly, had encouraged them to spend some further time looking at and using the map. Emotional Intelligence event success Back in February 2011 Chris Wakeling from Staffordshire University gave us an interesting and interactive session on emotional intelligence or as he prefers to call it ‘ emotional competence’ which was explained as the levels of self awareness, management of emotion and motivation for excellence. Dr Wakeling showed us humorous video clips of people lacking emotional competence and the group devised our own emotional competence framework of features that we thought made effective managers in terms of attitudes, values, skills and knowledge. We learnt about the history of emotional competence which apparently can be traced all the way back to Aristotle although more recently in terms of research by Daniel Goldman. We heard about the recent research which showed that emotional competence was the main indicator of success once someone had been recruited to an organisation, above skills and experience which was food for thought. To finish the event we undertook an emotional competence questionnaire which gave us the opportunity to reflect on areas for our own development. Overall the session was very informative and enjoyable and was a topic of great interest to those looking at how emotional competence can contribute to the success of both individuals and their organisations.
