Slide 1) Introduction Hello, my name is (say your name and where you are from). Congratulations on choosing to study a CIPD qualification, it’s a great way to develop your professional knowledge in HR or L&D and raise your profile in the workplace. Plus by joining the CIPD as a Student member you’ll be demonstrating to current and future employers that you’re serious about a career in HR or L&D. Not only that, CIPD membership also gives you exclusive access to the latest resources and development tools for your continuing professional development. I’m here today to talk to you about the many benefits of joining the Chartered professional body for HR and people development – during your studies and at every stage of your career. Slide 2) Student membership So I’ll be talking about: Who the CIPD is and who they represent. Why the CIPD is your career partner. The benefits of joining the CIPD not only during your studies but also throughout your career. How to become a Student member. There will be some time at the end of this presentation to answer your questions and you’ll be provided with some useful contact details, should you have any further questions. Slide 3) About the CIPD So to begin with, here is a little bit of background information about the CIPD. As the Chartered professional body for HR and people development, the CIPD has over 130,000 members internationally working in HR, learning and development, people management and consulting across all sectors. As an independent and not for profit organisation, CIPD is committed to championing better work and working lives for the benefit of individuals, business, the economies and society. So as your professional body it’s the aim of the CIPD to ensure that as a CIPD student you receive the support you need during your studies and throughout your career. Slide 4) CIPD as your career partner Think of the CIPD as your career partner: supporting, empowering and inspiring you every step of the way as you progress in your CIPD studies, membership and throughout your career in HR, people development and other specialisms. When studying a CIPD qualification, becoming a CIPD member is essential, as it gives credibility and relevance to current and future employers that you’re serious about your career. On a practical note, it also gives you immediate access showing you the latest HR and L&D resources, networking opportunities and development tools to keep you supported throughout your studies and keep your career on track. The great news is, CIPD membership will continue to evolve to meet your developing needs once you become CIPD qualified, providing you with tailored benefits and enhanced support at every stage of your career. And I’ll go into more detail about this shortly. We’ve also reduced the cost of Student membership to £90, making CIPD membership even better value. Slide 5) Gain professional recognition As a CIPD student you’re gaining the professional knowledge and skills to advance your career. Becoming a Student member ensures that your qualification is recognised towards CIPD professional membership, which demonstrates to employers your impact in the workplace. By successfully completing the CIPD Certificate or Diploma qualifaction (or an equivalent approved university programme) you’ll automatically become an Associate and professional member of the CIPD. Achieving CIPD professional membership is something you can be proud of. It’s your badge of competence, demonstrating your professional knowledge and impact with current and future employers; improving your career prospects and salary potential. Associate membership also entitles you to use the designation Assoc CIPD after your name, so you can carry your credentials with you everywhere you go. Assoc CIPD not only demonstrates your achievements in HR or L&D but also provides you with the status you deserve which in turn helps you have a competitive advantage over your peers If you’re studying a CIPD Advanced Diploma, when you qualify you can also upgrade from Associate to Chartered membership (subject to meeting the eligibility requirements for Chartered). Slide 8) Professional and career development Professional development Joining the CIPD gives you access to professional development tools to keep your career on track. CIPD members receive exclusive access to the new CPD tool – which is an interactive online assessment tool to enable you to plot your development against CIPD’s Profession Map. Career development Supporting you throughout your career is really important to the CIPD. That’s why they’re developing enhanced career support that will take you through your CIPD studies, your first and second job, promotions and beyond. There is nowhere else where you’ll be able to find a careers service that has been developed by HR experts for people developing a career in HR or L&D. Over the next year (2014-2015) the CIPD will be piloting careers services for Student members that will: - Connect Student members with a mentor (an experienced CIPD member). - Provide a series of career and CV workshops for Student members. - Offer CIPD Student members the chance to gain a HR work experience placement. Also being developed is a new careers web area that will provide practical advice and tools to help you at every stage of your career. Slide 12) How to become a Student member So how do you join? Joining the CIPD is quick and easy. You can become a Student member in 3 easy steps: 1) Go online to the student registration page. You’ll need to create a CIPD website account first. If you haven’t got one, you can do it at the register account page. 2) Enter your registration key, which is a unique joining reference number provided by your centre or tutor. Please also provide your contact details (including home and work contact details). 3) As a Student member you’ll pay a reduced annual membership fee of just £90 and a discounted one-off joining fee of £40 (normally £70). Payment options You can pay for your membership by setting up a quarterly or annual Direct Debit (UK bank accounts only) or if you’re based in Ireland you can set up Euro Direct Debit.
