Curator of Archaeology
1. Curate Southwestern archaeological collections and prepare exhibits. a.
Curate, research, design, and implement exhibits that focus on the archaeological collections and
Southwestern Archaeology. b.
Develop budget, create exhibit book, prepare exhibit text and objects, arrange for loans and photography, submit grant proposals, plan and implement a fundraising effort, design and produce an accompanying exhibit catalog. c.
Coordinate with conservation department, exhibit and graphics designers, preparators, collectors, authors, outside museums, and other staff to bring show to exhibit.
2. Facilitate and conduct research on Southwestern archaeological collections. a. Assist visiting researchers in locating and accessing appropriate materials; track visitors
and time spent using collections. b.
Access collections database, and in cooperation with the ICC Collections Manager, research and assemble collections for study or loan. c.
Supervise and assist ICC volunteers in cataloging and care of collections and other collections research. d.
Participate in other research partnerships and professional organizations.
3. Coordinate MIAC/Lab compliance with NAGPRA and with ethical obligations to Native
American communities regarding archaeological collections. a.
Initiate and respond to requests for consultation, identifying relevant collections and negotiating visits for collection review, ensuring comprehensive and timely satisfaction of requests. b.
Maintain contact with relevant tribal entities and other institutions as appropriate and in a timely manner. c.
Serve as the representative of the museum in NAGPRA consultations for repatriation and reburial of archaeological materials, ensuring full compliance with NAGPRA. d.
Attend Indian Advisory panel meetings and consult on NAGPRA issues and MIAC/LOA’s sensitive materials access policy.
4. Provide educational programs and contribute to public outreach. a.
Coordinate the Adventures in Anthropology educational outreach program, organize and supervise all single and multi-day tours, including mailings, marketing, logistics, and budget. b.
Plan and participate in other public programs in conjunction with ongoing exhibits and special events, including Breakfast with the Curators and Let’s Take a Look.
Education: B.A. in archaeology with a special emphasis on the American Southwest (Ph.D. preferred).
Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of archaeological fieldwork and/or working with museum collections. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and Museum policy; skill in effective communication; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with tribal representatives.
Knowledge of museum collection in area of specialization; knowledge and skill in collections management techniques and procedures; knowledge of relevant state and federal legislation; knowledge of accepted conservation principles; skill in planning and project management.
