DEK & SIPLACE Pressemitteilung
Amberg, August 19, 2014
Siemens Electronics Works Amberg’s Prof. Dr. Büttner shares insights on the
facility’s groundbreaking work
An in-depth visit to the Digital Factory
Because of the Siemens Electronics Works Amberg (EWA) facility’s status as
one of the world’s most advanced electronics production operations, it was the
ideal venue for ASM Pacific Technology’s press conference marking the
company’s successful acquisition of industrial printing expert DEK. During his
press conference keynote, Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Büttner, head of Siemens
Electronics Works, reflected on the technology objectives the EWA has shared
with SIPLACE and DEK, both having been EWA partners for many years. Büttner
also described his vision of a modern, highly flexible and thoroughly automated
electronics production coming to fruition with EWA’s ‘Digital Factory’. He went
on to outline the prerequisites for such a factory and also shared with attendees
the details regarding the joint projects Siemens is working on with ASM
Assembly Systems to make this vision become a reality.
“Siemens is the world’s leading manufacturer of electronic drives,” said Prof. Dr.
Büttner as he began his keynote address.” The EWA is building highly complex drives
while realizing outstanding standards for quality and productivity. Yet in an industry as
dynamic as electronics manufacturing, failure is inevitable unless there is constant
work on process improvement.
In Prof. Dr. Büttner’s view, digitalization of our world will continue to drive the quality
standards for electronics. With product variants increasing and lot sizes decreasing,
product life cycles are becoming shorter. “Traditional production concepts and
hardware-centric SMT lines cannot meet these new challenges,” he said.” This is why

we are working with progressive suppliers like DEK and SIPLACE to find solutions.
Today’s manufacturing challenges are only overcome with a modern, high-flexibility
production environment and through cooperation and constant information exchange.”
Industry 4.0 starts today
The EWA has been evaluating and implementing holistically optimized production
processes for some time. Future-oriented concepts already in place at Siemens EWA
support production tailored to customer and order status, transparent real-time
visualization functioning as a tool for optimization, semi- automated material logistics,
highly flexible setup concepts without line stops, and barcoded PCBs to control
placement and downstream quality testing.
The company sees great potential from the recently completed merger of SIPLACE
and DEK. “We expect that processes such as printing, inspection and placement which have been isolated until now - will become more integrated and that information
from one phase of production will be transmitted to downstream machines,” explained
Prof. Dr. Büttner as he outlined his hope for the future of manufacturing. “Industry 4.0
and digital factory concepts call for suppliers to have a deep understanding of all
production processes. From this perspective, the SIPLACE & DEK merger is an
extremely smart move.”

The SMT Solutions segment of ASM Pacific Technology
Since the acquisition of printing specialist DEK and its integration into ASM Pacific Technology
(ASMPT) on July 2, 2014, ASM Assembly Systems has been operating as ASMPT’s SMT
Solutions segment consisting of the Printing Solutions Division (DEK) and the Placement
Solutions Division (SIPLACE).
SMT Solutions develops and sells best-in-class DEK printers for the SMT, semiconductor and
solar markets as well as best-in-class SIPLACE SMT placement solutions. Both divisions use
the ASMPT organization to let their customers enjoy significant competitive benefits. ASMPT’s
SMT Solutions segment shares and expands its expertise with electronics manufacturers and
partners all over the world. Its goal is to improve its customers’ workflows and use new
technologies to advance process integration in the industry.
