Example 1:
Latitude (noun): imaginary lines that run east to
west around the globe. Latitude measures
distances north and south of the Equator, which
is the most famous line of latitude at 0 degrees.
Latitude is necessary for determining absolute
location. 1. Latitude is like a “ladder”: you
move up and down the “ladder” as you measure
north and south. 2. Ms. Levy’s “life-size grid”
measures lines of latitude at 10 degree intervals.
Example 2:
Compass rose (noun): a symbol on maps,
globes, and other illustrations that shows
cardinal directions (north, south, east, west). A
compass rose is a symbol used by map makers to
orient or position a map. 1. Ms. Levy placed a
large compass rose in the center of her life-sized
grid! 2. There is a large compass rose on the
world map that hangs on my bedroom wall.
