VACANCY NUMBER: 320.TS08.AD POSITION TITLE: VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS LOCATION: Tsaile, Arizona SALARY CLASSIFICATION: DOQ /DOE ~ $60,000.00 to $75,000.00 INTERNAL (7 days): OPEN: 6/25/2008 CLOSE: 7/03/2008 EXTERNAL: (7 days) OPEN: 7/07/2008 CLOSE: 7/15/2008 Role: Under the supervision of the College President and in coordination with the Vice-President of Finance and Administration, the VicePresident of Academics and Student Affairs is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and assessment of College academic programs and student support services according to the mission, philosophy, policies, and goals of the College. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Provides educational leadership for and oversees all aspects of academic program and student support services planning, development, implementation, and assessment in accordance with the College’s philosophy and mission. Recruits, leads, manages, supervises, and evaluates direct reports, including the Academic Deans and other student support program administrators. Develops annual budgets, monitors fiscal and programmatic operations, and directs the preparation of divisional reports. Responsible for the coordination of accreditation activities. Responsible for coordination of articulation agreements with other institutions of higher education, including MOAs, MOUs, etc Develops and enforces academic student support services policies and procedures that promote organizational effectiveness, safeguards student health, safety and ensures academic success. Assists the Deans and other student support services administrators recruit, mentor, and support the professional development of qualified and effective faculty and staff. Responsible for the development of an Academic Plan. Responsible for Recruitment, Retention and graduation of students Responsible for increasing enrollment throughout the College. Works collaboratively and collegially with faculty in the development of an Academic Plan and services that meet Navajo Nation needs and Student competency. Responsible for the development of a Distance Education plan and implementation of the plan. Responsible for developing a process of effective communication and decision making with faculty and staff (Academic Council and Student Life Council). Responsible for communicating and sharing goals of college with academic and student support staff in person, via technology and in writing. Respects and adheres to College philosophy and mission, including maintaining professional standards and ethical conduct consistent with the level of authority and position. Makes personal visits to campuses, dorms, and classrooms to understand and facilitate effective communication. Responsible for coordinating training and academic programs, both academic and non-academic, with Navajo Nation government entities, i.e., Workforce Development, Teacher Training, Social Work, etc., as well as entities and corporations on the Navajo Nation, such as BHP Billington, Arizona Public Service, Raytheon, School Districts, Indian Health Service, etc., consistent with the Navajo Nation Education Committee Resolution of Coordination of Higher Education. Meet consistently, at least quarterly, with staff and faculty. Responsible for Faculty Handbook, including Adjunct Faculty. Builds and maintains enthusiasm and morale. Responsible for development of the Diné Studies and other degree programs for BA level. Responsible for collaboration with all college departments in respectful, professional and culturally-appropriate manner. Responsible for developing research component with faculty role and responsibilities. Coordinates the preparations of academic grant applications, and helps implement, monitor, and assess the academic programs provided by such grants. Determines, assigns, monitors, and assesses the activities of teams, committees, and task forces charged with improving the delivery of academic and student support services. Education and Experience: A Master’s Degree in Education or a related field. Successful teaching experience at the tribal college, community college or university levels. Knowledge of principles, design, methods, and practices of academic programs in higher education including instructional technology. Demonstrated abilities to recruit diverse faculty and staff and work collaboratively with faculty and staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge and understanding of Navajo/ Diné traditional language and philolosophy. Demonstrated abilities to guide open discussions, resolve conflicts, and lead others toward a shared vision. Preferred: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education or a related field. Successful leadership experience in Navajo and/or American Indian Higher Education. Demonstrated familiarity with tribal governmental procedures. Abilities to speak, read, and write Navajo. Navajo/American Indian preference.
