Elementary Lesson Media Coordinator Name: Vern Guarino Lesson Plan Title: A Native American PBL Unit Grade Level: 5th Grade Time Required: 3-4 Weeks Essential Questions: Who are the Native Americans and what are their traditions? Description of Lesson: This is a cross curricular unit on three southwest Native American Tribes: The Hopi, The Zuni and The Navajo. Students will view a video clip of North American Native Americans as an overview. Students will research their assigned tribe according to requirements on their research fact sheet. Research skills will be taught and practiced in the classroom before starting actual research. Students will prepare an online picture story book that they will read to a K-1 class after they receive the completed paperback version of their story. Students will create traditional Native American homes of their particular tribe out of natural resources. Students will read Blood on the River in their language arts classes and connect to their research. Navajo speaker will visit students.
