CAWCR is seeking a scientist to undertake research on the evolution of tropical cloud systems using a
combination of polarimetric weather radar, cloud radar and other instruments. Particular areas of interest
include the factors controlling the evolution of these cloud systems and their interaction with the large
scale as well as using these data for validation of a range of modeling activities including the physical
processes in these models..
An MSc or PhD and research experience in a field relevant to radar observations of cloud systems is
required. Experience in the analysis of deep convective cloud systems with polarimetric radar is desirable.
Duty Statement
Under professional supervision,
1.
Undertake the analysis of polarimetric radar, cloud radar, wind profiler radars and other data
sources to investigate the detailed evolution of cloud systems and their properties. A
particular focus will be linking these properties to the large scale environment and assessing
the potential impact of these systems on the larger scale environment.
2.
Undertake comparisons of the observed radar data with output from cloud resolving and other
models for validation of the model simulations and identifying avenues for model
improvements
3.
Assist in the preparation of scientific papers, technical reports and documentation arising
from these activities.
4.
Be aware of, and apply as necessary, the principles and practices of the various elements of

Job Profile
The appointee will be a member of the Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research (CAWCR)
Atmosphere, land, Observation and Assessment Group and will play a key role in the study of tropical
cloud systems and their impacts in collaboration with the US Dept. of Energy Atmospheric Radiation
Measurement (ARM) Program. The project aims to improve the treatment of convective cloud processes
in models through the analysis of cloud scale radar and other observations and comparisons with model
results. This position will focus on the analysis of radar and other data but will also include opportunities
for comparing observations with the results from a variety of models including single column and cloud
resolving models.
The position will involve working with groups in CAWCR and other ARM associated scientists. The
appointee will also interface with university groups. The position will require the individual to keep abreast
of the latest developments in the field.
