Requires a master’s degree in anthropology and five years of work related
experience. Preference will be given to applicants whose education and
work experience relate to prehistoric or historic archaeology.
Work experience must include extensive work with artifacts and various
paper records.
Knowledge of North Dakota prehistory and history.
Knowledge of collection methods and procedures.
Ability to review, comprehend, and interpret a variety of technical data.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide
range of preservation constituents in both the public and private sectors.
Ability to move and lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to ascend/descend ladders and stairs.
Must have a valid driver’s license.

Summary of Work:
Promote the North Dakota State Historic Preservation Office goals and
objectives, with particular emphasis on managing collections (prehistoric and
historic artifacts, associated records, map files, illustrations, and architectural
plans). Prepare and maintain a document that identifies the collections curated
at the SHSND in the AHP Division and their research and education potential.
Process artifacts and associated records. Develop type collections. Supervise
volunteers and staff (on grant funding) to process artifacts and associated
records. Participate with the federal agencies regarding audits of their collections.
Provide reference and collection access to visiting researchers, staff of other
museums, museum visitors, donors, and families of donors to a level appropriate
to the visitor. Manage the loan program by identifying items/collections to go on
loan, review facility reports, inspect artifacts prior to loan and create a condition
report for the collection. Assist with the planning, organization, excavation, and
reporting of archaeological sites managed by the SHSND. Conduct independent
research. Develop and implement a plan for integrating the various data bases in
the Division to make more accessible the document, photograph, and artifact
collections. Prepare user guides and instruction manuals. Coordinate special
programs and projects as assigned.
