WRAPP FUND GRANT RECIPIENTS 2008-09

Consumers Association of Canada, Manitoba Chapter – $14,950 to promote greater awareness and use of reusable bags in Manitoba. The project includes distribution of free reusable bags, public education and a survey to determine consumer preferences, current patterns of shopping bag use, information needs and barriers to using reusable bags.

 City of Steinbach – $14,700 for Compost Challenge, a project intended to decrease the amount of yard, garden and food waste being sent to landfills through the sale of subsidized compost bins and free compost workshops.

 Flin Flon and District Environment Council – $25,000 towards the cost of a baler to maximize the amount of waste being diverted from the landfill and recycled.

 Manitoba Conservation, Parks Branch

– $25,000 to set up a comprehensive recycling program at Birds Hill Provincial Park and reduce the volume of solid waste being sent to landfills. A network of collection facilities will be established in various areas of the park and serviced by park staff.

– $30,000 to expand an organic waste collection program for

Winnipeg businesses and turn the organics into high-grade compost.

 Town of Leaf Rapids – $3,800 for a project to purchase recycling bins, evaluate current recycling activities and develop an educational campaign to improve recycling participation.

 University of Manitoba/Northwest Cooperative Fisheries Ltd.

– $25,000 for a pilot project to explore the possibility of composting commercial fish waste in northern Manitoba communities. Various composting methods and equipment will be tested to determine the best combination of fish waste and carbon sources.

 Village of Waskada

– $1,500 to assist in the purchase of blue boxes for a curb-side recycling program and to improve household recycling participation.
