CLASS TITLE: GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs) SCHOOL SITE COORDINATOR
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the GEAR UP Project Coordinator and school administrators, perform a
variety of administrative, accounting, and coordination duties in support of the GEAR UP Grant.
The School Site Coordinator will work at one of two middle schools in the Oceanside Unified
School District responsible for two cohorts of students (sixth and seventh grade students), and will
transition to one of two high schools in the Oceanside Unified School District when the students
transition. Assist in the organization, planning, and implementation of GEAR UP goals,
objectives, and activities. Serve as liaison between middle/high school faculty, staff, and
administrators, and MiraCosta College.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Assist in the planning, organization, and implementation of GEAR UP Grant activities.

Conduct workshops and presentations to students, their parents, and community
groups. (E)
3.
Promote and coordinate specific activities, prepare program event and marketing material,
including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets, and brochures.
4.
Instruct students in correct procedures for completion of forms and applications; explain
applications, requirements and restrictions; review completed forms for accuracy and
completeness; assist students by informing them of college and financial aid requirements.

5.
Refer students to community organizations and social service agencies for assistance
when appropriate. (E)
6.
Assist in the preparation of statistical records and reports.
7.
Supervise GEAR UP Grant support staff (tutors, aides, clerical support personnel, etc.).

8.
Attend community/collaborative meetings to promote the GEAR UP Program.
9.
Collaborate with and provide support for teachers, tutors, instructional assistants, and
administrators at school sites. (E)
10.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Provide accurate information to students regarding college programs and services.
Maintain current knowledge of college curriculum, rules, regulations and guidelines.
Develop and monitor budget for special projects.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Establish priorities and schedule and perform work to meet timelines.
Work independently with little direction.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Train and provide work direction to student workers.
Work confidentially with discretion.
Prepare and deliver oral presentations.
Operate a vehicle, observing legal and defensive driving practices.
Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
ethnic and disability issues.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to an Associate’s degree and one year of increasingly responsible experience in a
school environment.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California Drivers License
Must meet all requirements for California public school employees.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions
and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals from
diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to work effectively under pressure on
a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily busy, indoor office/classroom environments; subject to frequent to constant employer
and/or student contact and interruptions by phone and in person; may work during day and/or
evening hours on an as-needed basis.
