Job Description Job title: Mechanical Services Workshop Supervisor Department: Electronic & Electrical Engineering Responsible to: Technical Manager Location: 2 East Purpose of the job: To provide the staff and students of the Department with skilled, technical support for the design and manufacture of unique devices, the repair, modification and construction of new and existing equipment and rigs and the manufacture of new components. To work as part of a team of multi skilled technicians providing a service to both teaching and research in the Department. Skills provided by the post holder include the use of a wide variety of machine tools and hand tools, working with a variety of materials including steel, stainless steel, nonferrous, aluminium and plastics and assembly. The post holder also contributes to the teaching and supervision of undergraduates in the use of machine/hand tools and during final year individual research projects. Duties and Responsibilities: Using a high degree of technical expertise, provide design and manufacturing advice, assistance and recommendations to academic and research staff and students at all levels including: 1.The design, manufacture, repair, development, construction, modification and commissioning of equipment, rigs and models using a full range of conventional machine tools, bench equipment and fabrication / welding equipment. 2. To manage, maintain and supervise the operation of the PCB prototyping CNC milling machine, rapid prototyping equipment (e.g. 3D printers) and to teach and instruct others in their operation 3. To supervise the newly created post holder of Electro-Mechanical technician. 4. To work with academic and research staff in the design, manufacture and assembly of high quality components and to advise them on manufacturing and assembly techniques. 5. To receive instructions from students and/or staff, either verbally or in the form of drawings or sketches, and to advise and instruct as to the best manufacturing process and techniques (plan the best manufacturing process) using the tools and equipment available. 6. To teach undergraduate students manufacturing techniques and to assess their work in workshop classes. 7. To advise students and staff on the selection, purchasing and provision of research and laboratory consumables and equipment. 8. To supervise and demonstrate the safe usage of machine tools and hand tools to the students. 9. The operation and maintenance of workshop machine tools, plant, equipment and machinery involving hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing and assembly applications. 10 .To be responsible for the maintenance of a clean and safe workshop environment and to be the designated custodian for assigned laboratory space. 11. To check, clean and maintain workshop tools and equipment. 12. To comply with both statutory and university safety protocols. 13. To maintain a record of timekeeping and keep a log of work undertaken and for whom it was carried out. 14. The supervision of other laboratory and/or workshop based technical staff within the department as required by the Senior Technician or Technical Manager. Supervision Line Manager:- Technical Manager Supervisor: Senior Technician Supervision received: Minimal Supervision given: Electro-Mechanical technician Special Conditions Although based in the main workshop, the job may involve working at times in any of the Departments specialist laboratories. Lifting and handling of heavy and/or large objects is a necessity although training will be given and lifting/handling aids are provided when appropriate. Contact with chemicals (mainly solvents & adhesives) oils and fuels is sometimes part of the job and again PPE is provided alongside COSHH sheets for the materials. Normal university flexitime rules apply with the proviso that scheduled laboratory support must be met. The Department operates a lab custodian system; the post holder will be expected to assume responsibility for some lab space on this basis. Person Specification Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications C&G or BTEC Higher National Certificate / Diploma in an engineering subject. Assessed by I T A/F X X Served a recognised Engineering apprenticeship with substantial experience in an engineering environment. X X Previous experience of working in a toolroom, manufacturing or research and development workshop and an understanding of the issues to be faced in such a workshop X Experience and knowledge of the operation of CNC equipment to include programming X X Experience of working in a design group and to contribute to product design Skills X X Ability to use a full range of conventional machine tools.
