Job Title: TECHNICIAN POST A GRADE 3

Job Purpose:
To provide technical assistance in support of services offered by the department working as part of a
team to ensure the service is delivered to an agreed standard.
Principal Accountabilities (Responsibilities):
% Time
Carry out equipment maintenance according to detailed instructions by the line manager.

Ensure laboratory and its equipment is cleaned and maintained regularly to the standard
agreed by the line manager.

Undertake reception /clerical duties, receiving visitors and providing basic information to a
courteous and customer focused way to promote the image of the department.

Maintain an accurate filing system for invoice and goods receipt to facilitate an audit record.

Undertake regular stock checks to ensure accuracy of stock levels for audit and stock
control purposes.

Replenish stocks and basic equipment to an agreed level by raising new purchase orders
with suppliers and bulk stores if appropriate

Contact external suppliers regarding damages, shortages and late arrival of stock,
informing members of the department of the solution to remedy the situation.

Assess the volume of work to be undertaken for the days ahead and plan own time
accordingly.

Manage own time.
Internal and External Relationships:
Contact with all levels of laboratory staff to assess requirements associated with areas of
responsibilities. (Daily)
Contact with technical staff within the department.
Contact with technical staff in other departments to cover equipment breakdown.

Planning and Organising:
Organisation of own time on a day to day basis for carrying out routine tasks.
Plans routine tasks in conjunction with senior technician and line manager.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience (Indicate which are essential and which are desirable):
Minimum Requirements for Technical & Experimental Family Level 3:




Learning through on-the-job experience and through a programme of study leading to vocational
qualifications.
Some prior work experience of a generalist nature and a basic standard of numeracy and
literacy.
NVQ 2 or equivalent.
Five GCSE passes at grade C or above (for trainees).
Additional Requirements for Job:


Previous work experience, preferably in a lab or similar environment. (Desirable)
One year in post to become fully competent

Good working knowledge of relevant health and safety policies and procedures.
