Course Content
Introduction to Teaching surveys the work of a teacher, the public
school system, and the qualities necessary for success in the profession.
Ethical/ legal issues; student characteristics/ exceptionalities;
history/struggle for equity in American education; teacher
attitudes/practices and their impact on the success of all students
Current research and theories about human learning and development
are applied to school learning and instruction. Includes human learning,
cognition, and development; individual differences; motivation; learnercentered approaches to instruction; standardized and teacher-constructed
tests; validity, reliability, and bias; ethics
The course provides students with opportunities to network through the
Internet with students of diverse backgrounds through a PenPal
educational website.
The course provides students with an overview of special education and
services related to regular education. Characteristics of students with
disabilities as well as giftedness and talented/high ability learners are
examined and discussed. Disability areas; instructional strategies to
promote the success of all students.
The course focuses on teaching strategies, laws, and procedures for
working with students with special needs within diverse and inclusive
classroom environments. Candidates will identify key instructional
strategies and accommodations to meet the needs of diverse learners and
become familiar with laws and policies governing special education
practices in today’s schools.
This is the pre-student teaching field experience course designed to
provide the secondary education majors with opportunities to observe
and participate in his/her endorsement areas, with emphasis on active
involvement in the classroom.

middle grades. Candidates will observe and participate in two or three
different classroom settings from primary to middle grades.
