Recruitment Role Profile Form (Template) Version 1.0 Last amended: February 2011 THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM Recruitment Role Profile Form Job Title: Apprentice Technician School/Department: School of Life Sciences Salary £14,767 to £16,017 Job Family and Level: Apprentice Contract Status: Fixed term contract Hours of Work: Full-time 36.25 hrs/wk Reporting to: Jaime Hughes Purpose of the role: To train as a technician within the School of Life Sciences to support both teaching & research activities. Main Responsibilities 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. % time per year To become competent in providing a technical support service to a number of research groups, learning specific skills such as basic equipment maintenance, instrument function checks, restocking of consumables, preparation of stock reagents & general laboratory housekeeping to deal with their very diverse needs, completing tasks to appropriate time and quality requirements. Assistance with setting up laboratory classes as required. Instruction of staff & students (after training) in some of the basic laboratory techniques carried out in the School Learn and understand the importance of Heath & Safety within the School and the University. To be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of the School and University Health and Safety policy. To be able to demonstrate the ability to complete risk assessments, standard operating procedures, appropriate waste disposal, accurate record keeping and stock control. 30% To undertake and complete a suitable college course throughout the training period with a view to completing an NVQ qualification. To create and maintain a training log book over the duration of the training period to record skills learned and projects worked on. Any other duties appropriate to the role of a trainee technician 20% 30% 20% Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience Qualifications/ Education Skills/Training Experience Essential Good standard of secondary education, 5 GCSEs grades A-C or equivalent, to include English, Maths & a relevant sciences subject Desirable GCSE ICT (Information Communication Technology) equivalent. Good standard of written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to work effectively and efficiently both when alone and in a team. Commitment to developing a career as a Technician Time management skills The ability to study part-time whilst fulfilling the duties of the post Flexibility with the ability to work under supervision and as part of a team No previous experience essential IT skills & or An interest in Life Sciences Previous work experience (part time, paid or voluntary) or evidence of active participation in extra-curricular activities Decision Making i) taken independently by the role holder Routine simple tasks once competent ii) taken in collaboration with others Assist colleagues with the non-routine tasks iii) referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder Any non-scheduled tasks or tasks requiring further training Additional Information As an Apprentice this role is focused on training and once competent in a particular area to then be able to move on to learn other skills.
