JOB SUMMARY FORM Job Title: TECHNICIAN POST B GRADE 6 Department: Post Responsible To: / Line Manager (Please attach an organisational chart) Job Purpose: To provide technical laboratory support to various projects and research teams within the research group and project laboratories. Principal Accountabilities (Responsibilities): % Time Apply a broad range of methods and technologies, involving advanced analytical devices as part of the research project. Oversee the provision of technical support and assistance to projects, plan and carry out experiments and prepare materials and equipment for use within the research project. 40 Allocating tasks to other members of staff, and providing guidance and training to all members of staff on the use of equipment within the group’s laboratories. 10 Contribute to the development of new experimental techniques, methods and systems to improve the research outcomes. 10 Carry out high level quantitative and qualitative analysis upon generated data; interpretation of results and giving recommendations for solutions/conclusions 15 Record experimental work and present results in a professional manner so that it makes an effective contribution to group meetings and research publications. 10 Determine requirements for the current and future laboratories equipment resources and stock levels and ensure they are maintained and in good working order. Responsible for diagnosing and rectifying faults with equipment or arranging for repairs to ensure d the efficient running of the research programme. 10 Maintain a safe working environment and adhere to health and safety procedures affecting self and others at all times 5 Resources Managed / Facts and Figures: Equipment within the research laboratories is approximately £450k Consumable resources budget of £40k Department has over 150 academics and postgraduate staff and 400 undergraduate students June 2007 Page 1 of 2 Internal and External Relationships: Liaise daily with supervisor and members of the research group regarding research programme. Attending and presenting work and findings at group meetings on a fortnightly basis. Daily with students and other staff members to provide advice and assistance and training as required on the application of equipment or systems. Weekly to monthly interactions with representatives from external companies to discuss supply of equipment and consumables for the research. Weekly interactions with the Departmental Services Manager/Chief Technician regarding the purchase of equipment and materials and equipment maintenance. Planning and Organising: Plan and organise own work, usually involving several parallel projects. Plan consumables and equipment within budgetary constraints. Reorganise priorities when responding to queries with impending deadlines. Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience (Indicate which are essential and which are desirable): Minimum Requirements for Technical & Experimental Family Level 6: Technical or scientific education to HNC or NVQ4 level. Expertise with relevant office and other software packages. Prior work experience, typically of 4 – 5 years. Depth or breadth of knowledge in a particular area of technical expertise and be recognised as a technical expert in this area. Supervisory experience.
