Mathematics We will be following‘Target Your Maths’ in our day-today mathematics teaching. Friday morning will continue to be multiplication tests and mental maths. Maths investigations and enrichment will be a part of Forest School, Friday afternoons and other cross-curricular activities. For up-to-date maths activities and games that support learning in class log into: nrich.maths.org/frontpage PSHE Children will continue to follow ‘Values Education’. Assembly themes will be followed up in class. Links with the local community will continue through Friday afternoon activities. Conflict and Peace will form part of the topic work. Healthy living and ‘Respect Yourself’ activities will include ‘What is a balanced diet?’ (Classes 2 & 3) and ‘Food Groups’ (Class 3). The ‘Respect Yourself – Move More’ activities will be followed in P.E. lessons. Design & Technology and IT In their Friday afternoon sessions children use Scratch to learn about programming. They will use seasonal produce from the vegetable garden for their cookery. In art they will design and build a display about St Peter for St Peter’s church. Children will continue to use the internet to research topics. In the first half term children will design kites and paper aeroplanes. They will design and build a modern Anderson shelter. In th second half term they will design a London room (in a shoe box) during The Blitz. The room will need electrical lighting and blackout windows. Forest School and Forest School activities will closely follow the science and Maths curriculum. English WWII books by authors such as Shirley Hughes, Michael Morpurgo, Ian Serraillier and Michelle Margorian will inspire creative writing and poetry. Children will learn about the Battle of Britain by writing newspaper articles, radio broadcasts, explanations, instructions and designing posters. Research projects will include topics such as planes, shelters, London living and evacuation. Story teller Sally Tonge will visit the school to inspire poetry writing. The work of mid-20th century artists such as Henry Moore and Jackson Pollock will inspire creative written work. The Battle of Britain WWII History and Geography Children will learn about The Battle of Britain and how it was a significant turning point in British history. They will use a range of sources to find out about WWII. In particular- aeroplanes, radar, evacuees, London life during The Blitz, famous people and the home-guard. A visit to RAF Cosford will enable the children to look at planes from WWII and be involved in two workshops about The Blitz. Map work will focus on Europe, identifying cities, water and countries. Spellings and Grammar Comprehension activities and reading different texts form an integral part of many lessons. All of this is monitored carefully by teachers and support staff. In addition, there is a quiet reading time every day. Each Monday the children will be given new spellings to learn and will have a spelling test using the previous week’s words, in their own sentence. This helps the children with their spelling, punctuation, comprehension and concentration. In addition, daily spelling work will include a daily spelling rule/pattern to learn. Punctuation and grammar is planned into written work and short, daily grammar/ punctuation activities. Homework Multiplication tables, reading, Education City and spellings will continue as in the spring term. Education City homework will also include science. Religious Education ‘Open The Book’ performances will continue on Wednesdays. In the first half term the children will continue to learn about Judaism. On 13 October they will be visiting The Prince’s road Synagogue in Liverpool. Harvest will be celebrated at St Edith’s, Eaton. The Disciples Stephen, Paul and Peter will be studied. ‘Jesus Light of the World’ will be the focus for advent and Christmas. Science In the first half term, children will focus on forces and flight. They will design kites and paper planes. Experiments will be based on air pressure, air resistance and aerodynamics. In the second half term, children will learn about electricity. They will build learn about safety, build circuits, identify symbols. They will be set circuit challenges and conduct experiments using different types of circuits. See room DT model. Music and Drama Weekly music lessons with Mr Bennett will cover the music curriculum. In the second half term children will rehearse carols and the Christmas concert. Art On 13 October children will visit the Tate Gallery, Liverpool. They will learn about 20th century artists, in particular Jackson Pollock and Henry Moore (war art). Class work will include: plane sketches/art work, shadow pictures – The Blitz, colour mixing – shades of cloud/sky, drip work & pastel mixing.
