Homework Policy Learning at home is an essential part of good education. Regular homework is important, since it gives pupils the opportunity to practise at home the tasks done in class, and helps them work towards improving important skills. It also encourages children to become confident and independent in their learning, which will help throughout their time at school and in adult life. Homework activities are an important part of the home/school partnership and all children are expected to take part in a variety of homework tasks to enhance and support their work in class. At St Luke’s we acknowledge the important role of play and free time in a child’s growth and development. While homework is important, it should not prevent children from taking part in the wide range of out-of-school clubs and organisations. Aims At St Luke’s School we aim to: be consistent in our approach when we give homework. support children’s learning, by reinforcing skills learnt in class and by encouraging independent research skills. encourage children to develop personal organisation skills. take account of the needs of the individual child. ensure parents and carers understand what is expected of them. make homework manageable, meaningful and enjoyable for parents, teachers and children. Amount and range of homework We set a variety of homework activities. As the children move through the school, the homework expectations will change. The type and amount of homework is outlined for each year group below. We expect children to do more tasks independently as they move into Key Stage 2. Daily Weekly Termly Reception Reading with/to High frequency words Homework task related to learning Take Home Task Year 1 Reading with/to Take Home Task Year 2 Reading with/to Times Tables Spellings Maths sheet/activity Maths sheet/activity spellings Year 3 Reading Times Tables Maths sheet/activity Spelling Take Home Task Year 4 Reading Times Tables Take Home Task Year 5 Reading Times Tables Maths sheet/activity Spelling Sentences or Grammar Spelling Sentences Maths sheet/Topic related activity/sheet Year 6 Reading Challenge Times Tables Spelling Sentences Maths sheet/activity Personal Challenge Take Home Task Take Home Task Take Home Task Each term the class will be set a “Take Home Task.” This is an opportunity for the parent and child to work together on a topic based task. Once per year the task will be research based and the children will have the freedom to present their learning in a format that suits their learning style. These tasks will be shared and celebrated in class. Completion of Homework It is expected that children will complete their homework and give it in on time. In KS1 if homework isn’t completed the class teacher will approach parents to ask for their support with homework activities. In the event of homework not being completed in KS2 the children will be given the opportunity to complete the homework during playtime. A positive point may be lost if children consistently don’t hand in homework. Role of the Class Teacher To set up regular homework opportunities in an easily followed routine To ensure homework is purposeful and links directly to the curriculum being taught To acknowledge and praise children for regularly completing their homework tasks To mark homework when necessary and give feedback to children To provide an explanation of homework tasks to parents when necessary and give guidance of how they might assist their child Role of Parents/Carers To support the school by ensuring that their child attempts the homework To encourage and praise their child when they have completed their homework To become actively involved and support their child with homework activities Make it clear that they value homework and they support the school by explaining how it can help learning. To help their child by developing good homework routines Role of the Pupil To ensure they have everything they need to their complete homework each week. To make sure they understand the tasks that have been set. To complete homework with the same level of effort as would be expected in class. To hand the homework in on time.
