Beginning of the Year Letter

Dear Parents,
I just wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you to 2014 – 2015 school year, and to introduce
myself, Pearl Tidd. I will be your student’s teacher for this school year. Please feel free to contact me at
school concerning your student’s progress or any other concerns you may have during the school year.
My conference period is from 1:00 – 1:45 pm. To schedule an appointment, call the office at 236-5600,
or send a note with your student, or e-mail at patidd@episd.org.
To help the year go smoothly, I would like to state my policies concerning class work, homework, special
projects, absences, and class room rules.
CLASS WORK
1. All class work should be completed the same day it is assigned unless otherwise noted. Students
who need extra time to complete an assignment that is not graded may complete it at home. If taken
home, the class work must be returned the next day.
2. For graded assignments, students may come in before school starts the next day, or stay after
school. I will notify you if your student needs to come in early or has to stay after school.
3. Students who habitually do not turn in class room assignments on time will have to stay after school
to complete them. In this case, I will notify you that your student is staying after school to complete
an assignment. If same day make up is not possible, then other arrangements will be made.
HOMEWORK
1. Students will place their homework assignment sheet into their homework notebook. Homework is
usually assigned Monday – Thursday. The homework assignment sheet should be signed by the
parent to ensure homework is being done and to help you know what your student is doing in the
classroom.
2. All homework is due the following day unless noted in the homework assignment folder. Students
who do not complete homework assignments will lose their free choice enrichment workstation on
Fridays to complete those incomplete assignments.
3. If your student is unable to finish the homework assignments due to an illness or emergency, please
send a note with your student or e-mail me at patidd@episd.org. Students who bring a note or have
a parental e-mail will be given the opportunity complete the assignment and turn it in the following
day. Students who do not bring a note or have a parental e-mail will lose their free choice
enrichment time on Fridays and have to complete those assignments.
4. Redo assignments are due on Mondays. Your student may occasionally be given a chance to redo
an assignment for a better grade. Redo assignments will be given to your student or placed in their
homework notebook. Redoes will be given a return date and must be signed by the parent. Students
who do not complete the redo assignment or turn it in on time will keep the original grade.
SPECIAL PROJECTS
1. During the school year your student will be assigned special projects to be worked on in the
classroom or completed at home. I will send home a letter about the project and when it is due.
2. Late projects will not receive full credit. Students who do not turn in projects will be given credit.
BREAKFAST IN THE CLASSROOM
All students will be offered breakfast daily in the classroom from 8:00 – 8:15. Any student whom does not
wish to eat, does not have too. Participation is voluntary. Students will be picked up in front of the
gym at 7:55 and taken to the classroom to eat.
ABSENCES
It is very important that your student attends school every day. When not at school, your
student misses activities and group discussions. Also, please make sure that your student
comes to school on time. The school day is from 8:00 – 3:15.
1. Tardiness: Students are considered tardy if they are present in the classroom at 8:15. Students
arriving after 8:15 should stop by the office and bring a tardy slip to class.
2. Attendance: Attendance will be taken at 10:00. Students who are present at this time will be
counted present for the day. If a student leaves before 10:00, they will be counted absent for the day.
Students who return to school after 10:00 and have a doctor’s note will be counted as tardy instead of
absent.
3. Excused Absences: Students with excused absences will be permitted to make-up assignments.
Students have one school day for each day absent to make up assignments, and may be assigned more
time at the teacher’s discretion.
4. If your student misses more than one day, please call the office to let me know. Also if possible, please
try to come by or send someone to pick up the make-up work.
5. When your student returns from an absence, he/she will find a make-up folder on their desk with a
list of the assignments and papers needed to make-up the work. Make-up work will be assigned a due
date. Late work will not be accepted. Please make sure that you sign the folder before it is returned
to me. If there is a problem with the completion of the work by the due date, please let me know so
extra time can be given.
CLASSROOM and SCHOOL WIDE RULES
1. We use the “traffic system” to keep track of daily behavior. Green light means student has followed all
class room and school rules. Yellow light warns student to correct undesired behavior(s) and is a
warning for further consequences. Red light occurs when student has refused to correct undesirable
behavior and stronger consequences will apply such as note or phone call to parents, loss of privileges
for the day, removal from group to “time out” desk for the remainder of the day.
2. When an infraction occurs, the student will be given a warning and moved to “Stop and Think” sign, to
give student an opportunity to reflect and conference with me about appropriate behavior.
3. At the end of the day, I will record their behavior on the 9 week behavior calendar inside of their
homework notebook, stamping it with the appropriate color of green, yellow, or red. (You may see an
orange stamp instead of yellow). At the end of the grading period, I will average the behavior and it
will be recorded on the behavior section of the report card.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
During the school year I will be sending notes home asking students to bring some other supplies as we
need them for projects in the room such as magazines. I will give you at least a week’s notice. Parents, let
me know if for some reason you are unable to have the item asked for so we can work something out.
PARENT – TEACHER – ASSCOCIATION (PTA)
Do you wonder what goes on at Fannin? Joining our Fannin PTA is a wonderful way to
find out what is happening around our school and finding answers to questions that you
may have. I hope that you will join PTA with me. After all, it takes all of us working
together to educate the students of Fannin Elementary.
If you have any concerns or questions about my policies, please contact me. I will be glad to
answer your questions.
I am looking forward to a great rest of the school year and to meeting each and every one of you!
Sincerely,
Pearl Tidd
