Mrs Hartland’s Class
Summer Term, Second half
Dungeons and Dragons
Language and Literacy
We are reinforcing all our language and literacy skills this term. We are reading the stories together and using these to practice our
comprehension, spelling, and handwriting skills. We are identifying what we need to focus on when reading aloud to others and ensuring
we understand how to use punctuation in our reading and our writing. During our non-fiction work we will be carrying out research about
Castles. We will be reading fantasy stories and writing our own. We will also be composing some poetry.
Mathematics
The children continue to work at their own pace, receiving individual support where it is required. The areas we are focussing
on are multiplication tables and division, fractions and decimals, measurement, shapes and angles. We will also be applying
our knowledge by solving problems.
Understanding the World
Our main focus is history. We will be learning about what it was like to live in a castle and the different types of people that
would have lived there. We will be finding out why castles were built and what they were built from.
In science this term, we will be learning about electrical circuits and how to make a warning alarm for a drawbridge attack!
Some of us will discover what conducts and what insulates electricity.
We will be continuing to learn some French using the 2 Simple computer programme.
ICT will be taught across all areas of the curriculum. We will be using the Internet to carry out research relating to our topic.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development and RE
We will learn about Saint George and Saint Frances, their lives and what it means to be a saint. We will also be thinking about good deeds that
we can do for others.
Physical Development
Weekly swimming lessons at Wentworth Leisure Centre, gym sessions, PE and activities led by Mrs Scott (Bellingham Middle PE co-ordinator)
Expressive arts and design
These will be activities mainly based around our topic. We will be researching coats of arms and designing and painting our
own shield and drawing detailed diagrams of castles. We will be designing and making a magic ring that takes us in to a
fantasy world.
A few reminders:
Please could you try to read at home as often as possible. Even when children are fluent readers, it is valuable for them to read
aloud maybe to a younger sibling, or answer questions about the text.
Could children please have a suitable PE Kit in school every day.
It is also vital that children have the correct swimming kit every Thursday. This should be a one piece costume or
trunks, a towel and goggles if you wish. Hair should be tied back and earrings should be removed before coming to school.
Please remember that I can be contacted through Facebook if you can’t speak to me straight away in school. Also there is information on the
website that I try to keep up to date, in relation to dates and events.
Lastly, please feel free to come in any time for a chat or with any questions you have, either about the curriculum or anything else!
Thank you
Fay Hartland
