Castles in the Middle Ages Nicole Gardner 2/14/13 Period 2 Castles in the middle ages were not just used for protection. In fact, they had many comfortable features that would make the owner feel at home. On the ground floor, there was a large storage room. In this room, there would be pig sties and chicken coops. There was also a well so people could get fresh drinking and bathing water. Above the ground floor there was a large hall. This hall would be used for entertaining guests and banquet parties for the king and queen. It could be used as a court room as well, where the king could hold a trial. Off to the side of this room there was a small kitchen used for baking bread and wheat. On the top floor was the owner’s private sleeping quarters. Beds in the middle ages were mad out of wood and hay. However, the top floor was the warmest room of the whole castle. From the whitewashed walls on the outside to the fancy murals on the inside, castles in the middle ages were comfortable places to live.
