Appendix 1
Guidelines for course-related assignments at the ECLC
Introduction
This document outlines the steps that should be taken to utilize the ECLC as a laboratory school, open for professors
to bring their students as they undertake course-related assignments at the ECLC AUH and ECLC DXB.
At present ECLC AUH does not have built in facilities for recording footage or observing with sound outside the
classroom. This may change in the future. ECLC DXB has access to observation suites which capture data which can be
observed at a later stage or can be accessed for observing in real time. The observation suites are fully equipped with
AV and IT equipment.
In order to welcome as many professors as possible in addition to our research demands, it will be necessary to make
prior arrangements for your students to complete assignments. Arrangements should be made as far in advance as
possible, although urgent needs will of course be accommodated wherever possible. We look forward to you and your
students becoming a regular part of the ECLC team.
Please note that observations may not be scheduled during particular periods of time when there are special events
at the ECLC and in the very beginning of the semesters when the children are settling in.
Priority
As the ECLC is affiliated with the College of Education, priority will be given to professors seeking opportunities for
these students. Students will be facilitated in the following order:
1. Courses EDC 373 and EDC 352 will be given first priority as part of these courses qualify for lab credit.
2. Any courses in Early Childhood
3. Any Education and Social Work courses
4. Other courses
Steps for Professors to take for whole class assignments and projects
Phase 1: Communication with Director
1. Make initial contact with the Director (preferably near the beginning of the semester) to discuss your needs
and the needs of your students.
2. Director will discuss the overall request with the manager. Manager/ Director will liaise with teachers to
identify which classes could be involved in the assignments.
3. Professor will provide by email a brief summary of expected assignments/ observations to be completed by
students over the course of the semester, with the understanding that needs may change as necessary. This
should include the following:
- Form ECLC1 (Request for Observations, Special Projects and Class Assignments)
- Syllabus (which includes weekly plan and assignment details)
- Class list (once it becomes available).
4. All members of the class will be issued with a special ID indicating to the security team who their professor is
and which class they are from.
Phase 2: Communication with Manager and teachers
5. Over the course of the semester, the professor will first of all agree dates and times tentatively with the
Manager a week in advance of the activity involved. However, certain periods of time may be agreed in
advance as lab time (e.g. a regular weekly period of time to be agreed with the manager and teacher
involved).
6. Professors should then liaise directly with the teachers involved.
Requirements:
Form ECLC1
At some stage prior to their first assignment at the ECLC, students will need to be made aware of the Guidelines for
Observation at the ECLC. This can, for example, take 20 minutes in a lecture format or 1 hour in a workshop format.
This can be facilitated by the Director, Manager or the professor.
