Phonics is taught in a cross curricular context and through active learning. It is made relevant
to each pupil and begins within the context of early social play, rhymes and games, through
listening to word and sound play and associating this with relevant objects or people. Family
names, mummy, daddy and the initial letter sound of the pupil name are used at first to
engage each pupil as pupils respond better to this familiarity of sound. This is then transferred
to food, days of the week, toys etc until pupils begin to recognise the link between
object/person and sound and then letters and words when appropriate. We also use
sensory phonics through play to support learning.

Phonics is taught through “Letters and Sounds” and another
addition to the English curriculum at St Giles is “Engage to
Create”, developing comprehension of language and
transference of specific skills.
