Primary Job Purpose
To lead the team applying the expertise and specialised skills necessary to ensure the conservation and
presentation of HMS Caroline and her collection.
To be responsible for the implementation of the HMS Caroline Conservation Management Plan and
Planned Maintenance Schedule.
To raise the profile of HMS Caroline through: research, lecturing, publications, media partnerships, etc.
To maintain and develop the skills of the team.
Decision making authority and freedom to act
Plans and oversees delivery of the detailed work programme for conservation staff, volunteers and
contractors. Working remotely and acting with a significant degree of autonomy.
Takes the lead on managing material on display, creating regular work plans for approval from the Head
of Historic Ships.
Leads the work to develop, implement and review the long term programme of major conservation
tasks, including dry-docking.
Manages the use of the HMS Caroline collections.
Works alongside Heritage and Visitor Experience teams, contractors / sub-contractors.
Alerts the Head of Historic Ships to key issues arising in the course of conservation work.
Contributes to the delivery of the Corporate Plan.

Leads cross-directorate project teams, as required and contributes expertise to other project teams as
required.
Raises the profile of the NMRN externally through research, publication and media work.
Supports commercial activities around intellectual property rights for HMS Caroline.
Responsible for safe working by conservation and maintenance contractors onboard HMS Caroline,
attending safety meetings as required.
Financial responsibility
Delegated authority within the Heritage Directorate (level TBC).
Project Budgets as delegated by Head of Historic Ships.
Challenge Budgets as delegated by Head of Historic Ships.
Information systems
Leads regular meetings with team.
Ensures recording of conservation of HMS Caroline.
People management
Motivates, inspires and influences others, providing effective line management support to individuals
and the team to develop and reach their full potential.
Effectively delegates to support individual and team development to achieve team and strategic
objectives.
Ability to adapt management style, when required.
To coordinate the appropriate direction of volunteer effort to these collections.
Communication and relationships
Works closely with colleagues on board HMS Caroline and with other colleagues in the Heritage,
Resources and Visitor Experience Directorates.
Joins cross-directorate teams e.g. Project Teams, exhibition teams, HMS Caroline Site Management
Team, etc.
Establishes and maintains good relationships with externally commissioned professionals.
Ability to positively represent HMS Caroline and NMRN to external organisations.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Subject
Mandatory
Knowledge Specialist knowledge on the history, construction and use of early to mid-20th century
ships.
Specialist knowledge of best practice in conservation and care for historic ships, buildings
or industrial collections.
Knowledge of the different professional skills and services relevant to collections care
and conservation which are available through commissioning.
Experience
Experience of ship/building/industrial collections conservation project(s).
Experience of implementing management and conservation plans.
Experience of managing and motivating a team.
Experience of working with Museum collections.
Experience of communicating work in the Heritage field to a wide range of different
audiences.
