Primary Job Purpose To contribute in developing the work of the NMRN’s Historic Ships team, establishing the Museum as the leading UK voice in the policy and practice of conserving naval ships. To assist the work to research, conserve and maintain (as required by the stages of projects): HMS Victory, HMS Trincomalee, HMS Caroline, HMS M.33 and HMS Alliance and other such historic ships. To fulfill the role of HMS Victory Assistant Project Director. To support the Head of Historic Ships to propose, manage and report on project expenditure to Trustees of HMS Victory Preservation Company. To provide expertise to affiliates on ship based projects. To share the insights gained into the construction, history and use of our ships with audiences through research, publication and re-interpretation. Decision making authority and freedom to act To assist in planning and implementing the work programmes relating to NMRN’s historic ships. To advise contractors in execution of work to NMRN’s historic ships. To lead cross directorate project team as required. To contribute expertise to other project teams as required. To raise the profile of the NMRN externally through research, publication and media work. Challenge Budgets as delegated by Head of Historic Ships. Information systems Project and programme planning documentation: plans, programme, budgets and cash flow. To oversee the reports of external professional teams. People management Motivates, inspires and influences others, providing effective leadership to support individuals and teams to develop and reach their full potential. To ensure appropriate oversight of the work of contractors. Ability to work within and effectively contribute to a variety of teams. Ability to coordinate, plan and chair meetings. Communication and relationships Works with colleagues in the Heritage, Resources, and Visitor Experience Directorates. Attends and prepares papers for NMRN and HMSVPCO sub-committees, as required. Maintains good external relationship with organisations within the sector: e.g. National Historic Ships, Society of Nautical Research. Maintain good relationships with externally commissioned professional team. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Subject Mandatory Knowledge Specialist knowledge of best practice in conservation and care for historic ships, buildings or industrial heritage. Knowledge of the different professional skills and services relevant to historic ships which are available through commissioning. Knowledge of the history, construction and use of a wide range of wooden and steel vessels Compliance with Health and Safety. Experience of implementing management and maintenance plan relating to historic ships/buildings. Experience of working with museum collections.
