Primary Job Purpose To record and manage the data which relates to the original construction, refit restoration and on-going conservation of HMS Victory. To use this data to assist the Head of Historic Vessels, HMS Victory Technical Committee, contractors and sub-contractors to make informed decisions on future work. To develop this data to increase our historical understanding of the fabric of the ship. Decision making authority and freedom to act Undertakes Heritage Impact Assessments for all work proposed for HMS Victory and No.2 Dock in accordance with the agreed programme of capital works on the ship. Work alongside contractors / sub-contractors on the ship and uses knowledge to direct their physical interventions. Leads the work to specify, develop, populate and maintain the material state database for HMS Victory. Takes the lead in physically establishing and managing archaeological archive. Contribute to the delivery of the Corporate Plan. Proposes, manages and reports on projects to explore record and make public the archaeology of HMS Victory. National Museum of the Royal Navy | Reg Charity No 1126283 Financial responsibility Delegated authority from the Head of Historic Ships (Band F) for budget to manage archaeological archive. Information systems Shares and contributes knowledge at team meetings. Past inherited information e.g. original documents, archives of restoration, raze mark surveys, BAE records, material arising from the ship. Information generated as part of watching brief of ongoing work e.g. sketches, photographs, reports. Material state database which acts as a digital asset management system to link information to the ship. People management Ability to work within and effectively contribute to a variety of teams. Ability to work alongside the public and explain the significance of work. Ability to work with different contractors and give clear instructions. To coordinate the appropriate direction of volunteer effort and direct volunteer teams in routine tasks. Communication and relationships Liaison with contractors and sub-contractors. Attends and produces reports for HMS Victory Technical Committee, as required. Liaise with Duty Managers within the Visitor Experience Directorate. Works with Heritage Directorate staff, particularly those in the Archives Collections Team. Ability to positively represent the Museum to external organisations. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Subject Mandatory Knowledge High degree of specialist understanding of the principles of archaeological recording. High degree of specialist understanding of construction and materials of a historic wooden ship and/or historic building. Ability to sketch, photograph, note physical changes on-site.
