Primary Job Purpose To be an active presence on board to manage the original and replica material displayed on the NMRN’s historic vessels including: HMS Victory, HMS Alliance, HMS M.33 and other such historic ships. To monitor the environmental conditions on the ship and the physical state of material. Plan and undertake routines to prevent deterioration and intervening to conserve where possible. To work as part of project teams that are re-interpreting historic ships – particularly in relation to the sourcing and display of replica or original material. To work as part of a team to ensure that the NMRN’s historic vessels are maintained and operated to a high and safe standard. Decision making authority and freedom to act Takes the lead on managing material on display, creating regular work plans for approval from the Head of Historic Ships. Works in accordance with the agreed program of capital works on the ship – preparing and clearing areas before work begins, re-instating afterwards. Works alongside Visitor Experience team, contractors / sub-contractors on the ships. Alerts the Head of Historic Ships to key issues arising from regular maintenance visits. Contributes to the delivery of the Corporate Plan. National Museum of the Royal Navy | Reg Charity No 1126283 Financial responsibility Delegated authority from the Head of Historic Ships (Band F) for budget to monitor, manage, move, clean, preserve and conserve material displayed on the historic ships. Advises on specifications and sources quotations for replica materials. Information systems Shares and contributes knowledge at team meetings. Management and maintenance plans. Museum’s collections management database. People management Ability to work within and effectively contribute to a variety of teams. To coordinate the appropriate direction of volunteer effort and direct volunteer teams in routine tasks. Ability to direct cleaners in best practice and within planned schedule. Ability to work alongside the public and explain the significance of work. Ability to work with different contractors. Communication and relationships Close contact with Collections Management Team within the Heritage Directorate over documentation standards, etc. Works with Duty Managers within the Visitor Experience Directorate. Day to day liaison with external contractors whose work on the ships affects the collections and fittings on display. Represents conservation work to different audiences e.g. through informal learning activities, website and social media. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Subject Mandatory Knowledge Understanding of monitoring techniques and of interventions on the ship to promote preventive conservation. Experience Experience of working on-site in an historic ship / historic building environment or experience of working with industrial collections.
