Job Description: HMS Victory Curatorial Technician Location: National Museum of the Royal Navy and HMS Victory, Portsmouth Reporting to: HMS Victory Curator & Project Director Salary: TBC To work with the Curator in the day-to-day care and preventative conservation of HMS Victory’s collection of artefacts and display items. The role focusses on the safe handling, movement, maintenance and display of the collection. This includes the development and execution of the ship’s Artefact and Equipment Planned Maintenance Schedule. HMS Victory is about to embark upon a sustained period of conservation, restoration and repair, and the successful candidate will assist with the packing up of contents prior to the commencement of works and the reinstatement and redisplay of areas afterwards. They will support the Curator with the management of environmental and insect monitoring. Job Purpose To undertake the maintenance and display of HMS Victory and her collection of artefacts. Areas of Responsibility To develop and execute the Artefact and Equipment Planned Maintenance Schedule, and assist with other cleaning and maintenance programmes as directed. To monitor and stock check supplies of conservation materials, ensuring replenishment of supplies is undertaken in a timely manner. Liaise with colleagues in the visitor services and other departments to ensure the ship is well presented to the public at all times. To undertake as necessary the movement and handling of the collections, and assist with storage and display projects as necessary. To assist with monitoring the environmental conditions in which the collections are stored and displayed, including performing regular checks of all storage areas, inspecting for physical and biological signs of deterioration To ensure the safety and security of the collections at all times by actively minimising risk. Be a member of the Fire Salvage Team and ensure that all aspects of work are undertaken within the appropriate Health and Safety guidelines/legislation. To monitor and collate information on the condition of objects. To undertake projects to improve the preventative conservation and storage of the collections. To support the documentation of the collections including inventory, location tracking, and cataloguing. In conjunction with the conservation programme, assist in appropriate recording of the ship’s structure. Work with the NMRN curatorial team to review the storage and documentation of collections relating to the ship – including her foretopsail. Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Experience Experience working in an historic ship, house or museum environment. Varied object handling experience Experience of undertaking preventative conservation work including cleaning. Experience of manual handling. Experience of collections management.
