September Special Event: Bluff Country Byways Tour
Come on a journey to Southeastern Minnesota as we explore the historic Bluff Country Byways!
Historians and Photographers Doug Ohman and Jay Grammond will be our guides as we travel along the
byway to visit numerous points of interest.
Day 1: Our trip will begin in Red Wing as we visit a cemetery which holds some of the victims of the "Sea
Wing" disaster. From there we will continue on to Old Frontenac to view the historic 19th century
architecture that still exists in town. Our journey will continue to Wabasha for a visit to the National
Eagle Center where we will enjoy a guided group learning experience. After lunch (included) we will
continue to Winona where we will tour the Winona County Historical Center, St. Stanislaus Kostka
Basilica, and Woodlawn Cemetery. From there we will go to Rochester where will be staying at the
Hampton Inn & Suites. After check in we will head to dinner (included) at a local restaurant. After dinner
you will have the option to turn in for the night or attend a presentation by Doug and Jay in the
community room.
Day 2: After breakfast (included) Sunday morning (Departure at 9am) we will then head to the small
town of Wasioja where we will learn about a Civil War Recruiting Station and the ruins of the old
Wesleyan Methodist Seminary where we will learn about "The Boys of Wasioja" that went off to fight
in the Civil War. From there we will continue on to Owatonna for a tour of Minnesota State Public
School for Dependent and Neglected Children (the old orphanage). After lunch (on your own) we will
continue to Waseca where we will finish our trip with a tour of the Historic Woodville Cemetery and
participate in a special graveside presentation by a Minnesota Author Rachael Hanel.
Pick up in Fridley will be at 8:45 am September 21st at the Fridley Community Center (FCC). Drop off will
be early Sunday evening Sunday September 22nd at FCC. Price includes transportation, food (except
Sunday's lunch), all guided tours, and an overnight stay. Be sure to bring your cameras as your trip is
being guided by two of Minnesota's best Photographers! There is sure to be plenty of great shots!
Please come prepared for walking, inclement weather, and a fun journey!
