Term 1 – Nursery Rhymes: Rain, rain go away
Learning Outcome:
Students will be able to talk about the weather.
Target Language:
Weather: Sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, snowy
Introduction to Topic:
Circle Time: Register and Songs
Before lesson preparation: For younger students – Print A4 size copies of weather cards. (Attachment 1)
For older students – Print a set of small weather cards for each student in the class to use. (Attachment 2)
Theme Introduction: For younger students – Show students the weather cards and tell them what each one
mean. You can also show them how to show what the weather is like with hand and arm gestures for instance:
Waving hands and arms for windy, making a circle with hand for the sun etc.

For older students - Give each student a pack of the weather cards in a ziplock bag. Let them pack the cards out
in front of them. Let them hold up the card which shows the kind of weather you call out. For instance: “It’s a
sunny day.” Optional: After you’ve revised all the cards, sing the song with them letting them hold up the card for

Main Activity:
Craft 1: Paper toy windmill for windy days – Sample picture attached to the lesson. (Attachment 4)
Craft 2: Umbrella for rainy days – Sample pictures attached to the lesson. (Attachment 5) Umbrella template
with rain drops attached. (Attachment 6)
Craft 3: Sun colouring page – Template attached to the lesson. (Attachment 7)
Sensory Play:
Put some blue coloured rice in a big tray. Add the weather cards of the sun, clouds, rain drops, rainbow and
cotton wool and pipe cleaners to the tray with bowls and spoons. Let students explore. Encourage parents to
show students the cards and tell or ask them what they are.
Game/Movement Activity:
Parachute play:
- For a sunny day Students sit on the parachute
- For a windy day Students Push and pull the parachute or move it from side to side
- For a cloudy day Students sit under the parachute
- For a rainy day Students sit under the parachute and create a tent over them

Extension Activity for 2+yrs:
Weather wheel: Let students create a weather wheel with the template attached. (Attachment 8) Let them
colour the pictures first. Attach the arrow with a split pin.
