Term 1 – Nursery Rhymes: Old MacDonald had a farm
Target Language:

Farm animals: cow, goat, sheep, etc sung in old McDonald
Introduction to Topic:
Circle Time: Register and Songs

Theme Introduction: Print a copy of the farm animals so that each student will have one, (Attachment 1) and
put them in a bag. Call students to the front and let them pull a picture out of the bag and tell you which animal is
on the picture. (Younger students might need some help with this.) Students can stick the animals on an A3
size picture of a farm. (Attachment 2)

Play games: e.g. Raiden, which one is the cow? Caitlin, which one goes ‘Moo’? Student has to pick up, once
tried, give them a high 5!
*Demonstrate craft and display.
Main Activity:
Craft 1: Cow craft: See sample picture Attachment 3
Craft 2: Old Macdonald Farm Collage: Print one copy for each student of farm picture - Attachment 4 Print
copies of the farm animals - Attachment 5 Let students stick farm animals on farm and colour/paint picture.
Extra Crafts: Sample pictures of extra ideas attached to the lesson. (Attachment 8)
Sensory Play/Fine motor activity:
Put rice or corn in a big tray. Add some farm animals and some small rocks etc. Let students explore. Sample
picture attached to the lesson. (Attachment 6)
Music and Movement:
Put a picture of each animal, (cow, chicken, pig – Attachment 1) on the front of a basket. Put the baskets in a row
about 30 cm apart in an open area where students can easily move around. Now, let students sit in a half circle
with parents about 4 meters from the baskets. Put 2 coloured circles (cut out of card) in the middle between the
students and the baskets. 2 students stand on a circle. Teacher gives each student a plastic farm animal. When
the teacher says “go” the students need to put the farm animal in the correct basket. Do this until everyone had a
turn.
Extension Activity for 2+yrs:
Sticky sheep – Stick a big piece of Adhesive sheets on the window with tape with the sticky part on the outside.
Draw a sheep on the sticky sheet. Now let students throw cotton balls at the sheep and see if it will stick.
