Is this course right for me?
Family History Putting
the Flesh on the
Bones
This course is aimed at anyone who is
interested in researching family history and
has some experience of the subject. You
need to have attended the beginners’ course
or to have some experience of researching
your own family history or local history.
What will I learn on this course?
You will develop the knowledge and skills gained during the Family History for Beginners course,
including how to:  Research your own family history.
 Find records, use archive offices and library collections.
 Use and interpret a range of historical records.
 The course will also look at a wider range of records such Poor Law, Employment, Education
and Migration.
 Put your family history into a social historical context
The course will involve some practical work, examining historical records on the internet and in hard
copy. The classes will be a mixture of some teacher lead sessions, group discussions, the use of
historical records in groups and individual work researching your family history.
There will be a visit to the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society.
Will I need to work at home?
It will certainly help, as you will want to take work home and carry out further research on your own
family history research project or visit libraries and use the internet.
What else do I need to know?
Always bring pen, paper and a file to the session, as you will steadily build up a file of resources,
such as handouts, notes and the records you have found relating to your family. A magnifying glass
is also useful. Family history is fairly low cost and fun; all you need is the interest. You can access
resources (books, family history records, etc) in libraries and use the library computers to search the
internet. There is free access to the Ancestry website at the local libraries.
