PSD (Personal and Social Development – Accredited Unit) In PSD this term we are looking at spotting hazards in the home and ways in which we can prevent these from happening (Living room, Bathroom and Kitchen). We are looking at how to use kitchen utensils safely and preparing a range of snacks using these kitchen items. We are also going to be looking at how to keep ourselves safe when out and about in the community by learning about stranger danger and road safety. We are going to be learning to plan a trip to a local place (the local shop) and travel there in a safe manner. Heltwate School Curriculum Forecast Here are our curriculum plans for your child RE Re this term will tie in closely with our humanities topic work. Students will be looking at the work of religious charities and the people they support. Students will be considering questions such as ‘why do people give to charity?’, What is ‘Zakat’?’ and ‘why do we have religious charities?’. Learners will be introduced to parables from a range of religions that advocate charitable acts and questioning whether giving to charity should be a duty or a choice. Lifeskills Life skills this term will focus on cooking with fruit and with vegetables. We will visit local shops and supermarkets to select ingredients from a list and will self scan to pay for these. We hope to use the mini bus and public transport for our frequent visits out of school. Literacy Numeracy This term the class will be: Continuing with regular phonics sessions at the appropriate level for each student. Information Texts – identifying the key features of these and differences between information and stories. Looking at alphabetical order and writing labels and captions for useful machines. Creating own imaginary useful machine and writing several sentences to form captions for these. Poetry – poems, stories and chants with patterns and rhyme in them. We will be looking at skipping rhymes, list poems and writing other verses for poems we are learning. Students will also re-tell, through drama and puppets, a story with repeated patterns. (Hairy Mc Clary from Donaldson’s Dairy) This term we will be working on: Number – recognition of numbers, ordering and counting 1:1 and in groups of 2, 5 and 10. Symbol recognition, strategies to aid calculation and counting on, accuracy and checking answers. The class will be working with numbers to at least 20 (and above for some), and will be doing simple addition and subtraction with these. We will also be using money in calculations. Time - Revise clock face and hands. o’clock, ½ past the hour. (And quarter past/to for some students). Digital clocks. Times during the day and days of the week. We will be using a range of computer programs to support learning. Work will be differentiated according to individual students needs. Science Design Technology This term we are looking at ‘Forces’. Students will be involved in a range of investigations, based around simple ‘push and pulls’, air resistance, water resistance, gravity, friction and magnetic forces. Students will be investigating the forces they can apply themselves, alongside naturally occurring forces and the effect of forces upon objects. Topic Work (Humanities) Topic work this term will see students explore the word ‘poverty’. Students will be enabled to make comparisons between their own lives and the lives of children living in poverty across the world. Students will also be learning the meaning of ‘fair trade’ and child labour. Students will be introduced to case studies of other young people who work rather than attend school and consider, (later on in the term), how poverty impacts on traditions such as Christmas. Music This term in Music, students will be considering how music can be used to tell a story. They will identify contrasts of fast and slow, loud and quiet and will be finding out about rhythms. Students will be involved in interpreting music and sounds in order to match them with corresponding events, emotions or actions. Rainbow 2 will be practicing singing too. During this half term the students will try flying a variety of kites. They will also look and compare the materials used to make a kite as well as design a kite to fly. Art In Art this term students will be looking at the aesthetic features and functionality of kites. This will include looking at work by a range of artists and adapting and utilising styles to suit their DT kite designs. PE PE this term will consist of weekly hall/outdoor based physical exercise for all students, as well as half- termly swimming sessions. PE sessions will be led by a qualified coach from Youth Dreams Project. During swimming sessions, students will work on building core skills and water confidence and will be working towards ASA Duckling swimming Awards. ICT This term in ICT students will be undertaking the module ‘We are Treasure Hunters’. This will involve inputting information into a programmable toy to enable it to follow a route/negotiate obstacles. The class will be using the Bee-Bots and the Bee-Bot app on the Ipad to reinforce and practice the skills. NB: The above plans are guidelines only and could be subject to change as necessary.
