LHS PTSA General Membership Meeting
November 19, 2014
Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 9:00am by President Colette Worm. Minutes from the October 22,
2014 meeting were approved as written.
Renovation Update (Matt Haley):
* LHS is on track to begin major renovation after contract was approved on Monday. Matt reviewed a list of 90 items
with the design and construction team.
* All agree it is important we are communicating with neighbors surrounding LHS grounds during the entire
construction period.
Budget (Ann Haley):
* Treasurer Ann Haley passed out copies of the budget. No questions from the floor.
President’s Report (Colette Worm)
An online vote of the Executive Board was taken by 10/20/14 and then voted on at the 11/24/14 General Membership
Meeting--both motions were approved unanimously, which allowed the Executive Board to spend more money for
appropriations:
Vote A: Ann Haley has moved that the amounts for appropriations requests can vary by 10% over the submitted
amounts for purchases of requested or similar type of appropriations items.
Vote B: Ann Haley, Treasurer, has moved that the Executive Board present to the General Membership that the
2014-15 budget be revised to $35,000 for PTSA programs and to $48,000 for appropriations.
Announcements:
* Janie Strauss will speak at the GF Library on 12/9 at 7:30 during the GFCA meeting. All are welcome to attend.
* Sandy Robinson is compiling a list of all the past Langley reads and books read by the PTSA Book Club. The list
will be up on the PTSA website.
* Orchestra Concert this Thursday, “An evening in Vienna.” Visit the LHS Orchestra website to purchase a White
House Christmas ornament or Honeybaked Ham to support their Fundraising efforts.
* The Choral Madrigal Feast is 12/5 and 12/6. Visit the Choral website for tickets and info.
* The LHS Science Fair is 1/22. Judges are needed from 1:30-7pm. Contact Mr. Gilman to sign up.
* LHS 50th Anniversary Celebration will be during Homecoming 2015 with date announced soon.
* The Reflections contest had 12 entries this year.
* The VA PTA recipe contest for grades K-12 deadline is March. Details will be in an upcoming Enews.
* To date, the FCPS Suicide Crisis Hotline has saved the lives of two teens.
* Betsy Shomaker thanked those who came to the PTSA Book Club meeting. The next meeting is 2/10, and the
book is That Crumpled Paper was Due Last Week by Ana Homayoun.
* Service learning opportunities are available for students over the holidays. Check the website.
PTSA Meeting Adjourned at 9:35am.

Report from Principal Ragone:
* Kudos to the Drama Dept. for their production of The Putnam County Spelling Bee.
* Many thanks to Matt Haley for all that he does and his tireless work on the renovation.
* Thanks to LHS faculty and parents, the Student Wellness Program has become a model for other schools.
* Stop Hunger Now is 2/7 at Colvin Run Elementary. Details on the LHS website.
Sonya Williams/Student Services:
On 12/1 the “Signs of Suicide” screening process will be done fo 9th graders. All staff administering the screening
have gone through extensive training. A video was shown called “Trusted Adults” which will be shown to all 9th
graders. More info on this program can be found at Kognito.com/fairfax.
