Parent Newsletter
In September of 1879, the American
poet Walt Whitman visited Kansas for
a celebration of our state. He spent a
couple of days in Lawrence and later
wrote about his experiences in Specimen
Days. While here, he visited KU and
Bismarck Grove, north of town, and he
left behind his famous signature on a
piece of paper. That piece of paper is
now for sale by Bauman Rare Books in
Las Vegas.
Lawrence High School wants to bring
it back.
The LHS English department, the
National Honor Society, and the
graduating class of 2015 are fundraising
to bring Walt Whitman’s signature to
the halls of LHS, where it belongs. The
signature is framed nicely with a
portrait of Whitman, and the dealer is
charging us an institutional price.
Currently, Bauman has it on reserve
for us.
We have already collected some funds,
but are striving for another $2300 in the
month of April, as a celebration of
National Poetry Month and a
celebration of Lawrence High School.
If you would like to donate, please
send checks to LHS c/o the Walt
Whitman Signature Fund. Our goal is
to have the signature here by the
beginning of May for presentation.

The 30th Annual STUCO Mud Volleyball Tournament will be held on Sunday, May 3rd, from 11am to 7pm at
Broken Arrow Park. Our old courts are buried under all sorts of construction equipment, but Douglas County
Maintenance dug us four new courts in the southeast corner of the park. We are appreciative of their continued
support as well as the support of the Wakarusa Fire Department. This event is sponsored by the student council,
LHS mud staph, and parents. If you would like to help sponsor this event by being a court supervisor, parking
director, or volleyball official, please contact Jo Huntsinger at jhuntsin@usd497.org
If you are interested in forming a co-ed LHS parent team, please contact Jo by Friday, April 25th.
Students interested in LHS Summer
Volleyball camp can access the registration
form here or visit the LHS website.

Greece, alternatively).
Once upon a time there was a community that knew their young people carried the future in their hands. They wanted
them to have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
The Lawrence High PTO is a group of parents dedicated to supporting teachers, providing resources to
students and celebrating remarkable achievement.
We use the money raised from membership dues and selling school merchandise to support student activities
and provide teacher grants that enhance education.
The high school years often can become a time when parents become less involved in their child’s education, at
LHS, we believe the on-going engagement of parents makes a difference.
Stay involved. Remember who holds the future.
