Students will complete 150 hours of internship throughout second semester of senior year. The premise of the program is that students who are engaged in work-based learning activities will be more likely to make connections between learning and the real world. Through this program students have the chance to gain selfknowledge, begin to achieve post-secondary goals, and become more highly qualified to enter the workforce. They are also able to develop a professional portfolio earlier than their peers and NETWORK! QCC offers programs with and without a fee for students looking to do an entire semester or year as well as just looking to take one or two classes. The Gifted Student Program at The College of the Holy Cross allows selected students to take one of their courses for free. Becker Dual Enrollment offers a free course to students in either Fall or Spring semester. Students have taken: ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ Intro to Psychology Principles of Drawing American Cinema Technology & Society Intro to Sociology Criminal Law LHS Forensics (LPD) The Leicester Police Department, in conjunction with Leicester High School, offers a ten week Forensic Science class. Classes meet for 2 hours once a week, in the evenings, for the length of the spring semester. Students earn 2.5 credits. Over 20 LHS students take this course each time it is offered. This class has been an incredibly big hit with students and has been a great bridge between LPD and LHS. VHS Students are able to take virtual high school classes in their junior and senior year of high school. Classes are taught by teachers across the country in a variety of topics including: ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ Preventative Medicine Parenting in the 21st Century Philosophy Oceanography Bioethics Business and Personal Law Italian Language & Culture Video Game Design Community Service LHS students are all required to complete 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. Community Service allows students to broaden their horizons. It can offer students a practical application of lessons learned in the school setting, it can expose them to possible career interests, they can begin networking, and most of all it sets the stage for giving back to their community. Service can be done at the school, in the Leicester community or other neighboring communities, and with church groups, town offices, or for special causes. Students cannot get paid for their service and have to submit their hours to Mr. Smith, the school’s adjustment counselor. Guidance & Student Support: The LHS Guidance Mission: Guidance strives to support each student in their journey of self discovery & to assist them in developing and achieving their educational and career goals. Support Services are offered by both Guidance Counselors Mrs. Warnken (A-K) & Mr. Bowes (L-Z) as well as our full time Adjustment Counselor Mr. Smith, who is available to ALL students. In the Class of 2014: ◦ Approximately 90% of students went on to post-secondary training or college; 61% going on to 4 year and, 29% going on to 2 year college. LHS has one of the most well-developed curriculum based Student Mentor Programs. It’s called STOMP. This offers ongoing support and continuity for students throughout their four years at LHS. LHS AP data 2014 Leicester High School offers 9 Advanced Placement (AP) classes. Score on the exam is 1-5 with 5 being the best. With a score of 3 or higher students can earn college credit.
