PHASE ONE OF SELECTION PROCESS
Selection Mini-Workshop – All candidates must attend ONE of the workshops below. Please mark the workshop you
will be attending. Attendance at the workshop is mandatory for consideration.

PHASE TWO OF SELECTION PROCESS
Individual Interviews – A number of candidates will be chosen from the Selection Mini-Workshops for an individual
interview. Interviews will be held Wednesday, February 19 through Friday, February 21. Times and locations will be
arranged on an individual basis.
Notification of Selection will occur by Friday, February 28.

SUMMER ORIENTATION
STAFF ASSISTANT POSITION DESCRIPTION
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. At least sophomore status (28 or more credits) at the start of the dates of
employment.
2. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at time of application.
3. Demonstrated involvement in campus life.
Please Note: Due to the sensitive nature of this position it is at the discretion of the Director of Orientation to review and
consider any previous student conduct with the Dean of Students Office as a condition of employment.
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT:
Sunday, May 18 through Saturday, July 12 (eight weeks)
(Students may not be enrolled in summer courses while employed as a Staff
Assistant, but must be enrolled for classes for the following fall semester)
REMUNERATION:
$2,500 plus room and board
REPORTS TO:
Assistant Directors of Orientation (2) and the Director of Orientation
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Be available to assist students, parents, and University personnel throughout the duration of each orientation session.
2. Be familiar with the general and specific goals of the Orientation Program.
3. Be familiar with various University publications, academic offerings and available services in order to respond
intelligently to questions about Northern Michigan University.
4. Assume general responsibility for the students assigned to her/his housing unit and/or group in each session.
5. Perform other responsibilities assigned by the Assistant Directors and/or Director of Orientation.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Actively participate in an extensive training program prior to the first summer session.
2. Actively participate as a member of the Summer Orientation staff team.
3. Assist with the preparation of the residence halls prior to the beginning of the summer program (i.e., bulletin boards,
desk area, keys, etc.).
4. Assist with check-in and check-out of participants for each session.
5. Provide campus tours for parents and students attending each session.
6. Serve as a group leader for designated meetings and assist in distributing materials.
7. Assist with the development of an integrated program of small-group discussions, informational meetings,
entertainment, and associated sessions necessary to ensure that students and their parents receive a comprehensive
view of the University.
8. Be prepared to assist with completing the academic advisement and registration procedures outlined as part of the
orientation experience.
9. Perform certain functions related to improving enrollment conversion or preparing for up-coming sessions between
sessions as assigned.
10. Participate in an evaluation of each session and submit a written evaluation of the entire Summer Orientation Program.
11. Meet with the Assistant Directors and/or Director of Orientation whenever requested.
12. Assist with the hosting of prospective students and/or guests as deemed appropriate by the Assistant Directors and/or
Director of Orientation.
13. Assist with various program tasks or duties as deemed appropriate by the Assistant Directors and/or the Director of
Orientation.
